Deadline: 15-Mar-22
The Food Banks Canada is offering grants “2022 Northern Capacity Fund” to support sustainable capacity investments in Northern communities as high food prices and transportation issues continue to drive food insecurity in this region at rates disproportionate to the rest of the country.
The ultimate goal of this funding is to build sustainable food security initiatives that will provide ongoing support, food industry partnerships and systems for those in need.
In Nunavut alone, the data shows that 57% of households are food insecure, but a report by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national representative organization for Inuit in Canada, puts this figure closer to 77%. Other structural factors such as the impact of colonization, which forced Indigenous people living in the region to rely on store-bought food instead of traditional hunting and harvesting.
