Alberta Law Foundation announces Grant Program (Canada)

Call for strengthening SLCP planning and implementation while increasing capacity for Methane Mitigation (Benin)

Deadline: 4-Jan-21

The Alberta Law Foundation has announced funding programs and services to improve Albertans’ knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities, conduct legal research, propose law reforms, and enable Albertans to effectively exercise their rights under the law.

Together with grantees, they are fulfilling their mission to build a better justice community in Alberta. They accept applications for funding four times per year from charities and other non-profit organizations whose programs and services align with their objects and strategic priorities.

Alberta Law Foundation is an independent non-profit organization. It is not a registered charity. The Foundation receives the interest which banks, credit unions, trust companies, and treasury branches pay on clients’ funds held in lawyers’ pooled trust accounts. This does not include interest paid on specific trust investments held for individual clients.

Objectives

Programs and projects funded by the Foundation must address one or more of the objects set out in the Legal Profession Act:

  • Conducting research into and recommending reform of the law and the administration of justice;
  • Establishing, maintaining, and operating law libraries;
  • Contributing to the legal education and knowledge of the people of Alberta and providing programs and facilities for those purposes;
  • Providing assistance to native people’s legal programs, student legal aid programs, and programs of like nature;
  • Contributing to the costs incurred by the Legal Aid Society of Alberta to administer a plan to provide legal aid. (This contribution has been legislated to be 25% of revenue from lawyers’ general trust accounts).
