The Stroke Foundation’s Research Grants Program to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.
The 2022 Grant Round will fulfil two distinct purposes of Stroke Foundation’s Research Grants program:
- Providing Seed funding as a platform for Early and Early-Mid Career Researchers to test their ideas, gain experience in leading a small project and tackle evidence and implementation gaps in stroke prevention, treatment and recovery.
- Dedicating a grant to Aphasia specific research. This 2-year grant is available to researchers of any career stage and stems from the generosity of Stroke Foundation Patron, Lady Marigold Southey and the supporters, to establish the Stroke Foundation Lady Marigold Southey Aphasia Research Grant.
Grant Schemes
- Early and Early-Mid Career Researcher (EMCR) Seed Grants: Three (3) $70,000 Seed Grants available to Early and Early-Mid Career Researchers addressing (at least) one of the 2022 Research Priority Areas for Seed Grants:
- Health services and pathways of stroke management shown to have efficacy, using a translational design (i.e. implementation studies to translate evidence into acute and subacute practice).
- Long-term community support beyond 6 months post-stroke (e.g. interventions to improve continuity of care, community health services, primary care, social isolation).
- Long-term psychosocial recovery beyond 6 months post-stroke (i.e. interventions for recovery of cognition, communication, and emotional and social wellbeing). Depending on the research question, this could be designed as a feasibility or efficacy study relevant to this priority.
- Stroke Foundation Lady Marigold Southey Aphasia Research Grant: One (1) Grant of up to $100,000 in total over two years available to researchers of any career stage addressing (at least) one of the Aphasia Research Grant Priority Areas:
- Developing new behavioural and neurobiological methods for measuring, predicting and understanding aphasia recovery.
- Optimising dose of aphasia treatment across the recovery continuum.
- Use of technology and digital health to enable access to aphasia rehabilitation and community participation.
- The development of accessible interventions to optimise mental health and well-being for people with aphasia and their carers.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must demonstrate how their project directly addresses the research priority area(s) identified in the grant offered, in the appropriate section of the application form (1.4 Relevance to the stroke research priority area/s). This response is reviewed in Stroke Foundation’s preliminary screening for eligibility undertaken prior to applications being allocated to independent external peer review. It is therefore important that applicants ensure clarity in their response for how the priority area is directly addressed by the project, to avoid an ineligibility decision.
- One distinct proposal per PI per grant scheme will be accepted. A PI may submit one project proposal for the Lady Marigold Southey Aphasia Research Grant and submit a different project proposal for an EMCR Seed Grant. A PI may be successful in each grant scheme in which they have applied. If it is found that the same project has been submitted to both schemes, both applications will be deemed ineligible.
- The research must be carried out in Australia.
- Consumer engagement in the study design or ongoing conduct of the research. For this criterion, engagement that is meaningful and proportionate to the project is encouraged and accepted.
- The project timeline does not exceed the grant period. The grant period incorporates ethics approval. Proposals building upon existing work such as consumer engagement in study design, pending or existing ethics approvals can apply where all other conditions are met. Pre-work relevant to the proposal may be indicated in the project timeline, without altering the effective start date of grant period.
- Justification of the proposal’s inclusion and exclusion criteria. Proposals that provide considered inclusion methods, such as for people with communication impairments and from marginalised and disadvantaged populations relevant to the study, will be highly regarded.
- Grant funds can be used to support personnel such as research assistants, casual help or PhD stipends, and for consumables and small items of equipment or other assistance necessary to carry out a specific project. Salary on-costs can be included in the project budget. The project budget must be justified and meet the grant criteria for funding.
Specific Eligibility – Early and Early-Mid Career Researcher Seed Grants
- These grants are available to Principal Investigators who are Early and Early-Mid Career Researchers who have not previously received a Stroke Foundation Seed Grant. The career stage of the Principal Investigator must be clearly specified in relation to the definition and guidelines provided.
- Principal Investigators who have experienced career disruptions will be considered.
- Applications must directly address one (or more) of the 2022 Priority Areas for Seed Grants.
- Seed Grant periods are effective 18 months from the start of the award year (i.e. 1 January 2022 to 30 June 2023).
Specific Eligibility – Lady Marigold Southey Aphasia Research Grant
- This grant is available to researchers of any career stage.
- Principal Investigators who have previously received any Stroke Foundation Research Grant are eligible to apply.
- Applications must directly address one (or more) of the Aphasia Research Grant Priority Areas.
- This grant period is effective two (2) years from the start of the award year (i.e. 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2023).
