Australia: Northern Territory Men’s Places Grants Program

The Northern Territory of Australia is seeking applications for Men’s Places Grants Program.

The Northern Territory Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2025 identifies five focus areas to reduce gender based disadvantages and create greater opportunities for all Territorians, where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and fairness and where everyone has a voice.

There are a number of actions in the Action Plan that seek to improve the lives of Northern Territory men such as:

• Supporting events and activities that provide opportunities for greater social connection and positive mental health outcomes for women and girls, men and boys and gender-diverse Territorians.
• Partnering with organisations and communities to develop resources and health information that considers gender and encourages health seeking behaviours – including mental health.
• Promoting positive male role models, positive fathering and grandfathering to celebrate the positive impact of men on their families and communities.

Focus Areas

The assessment will consider programs, services or events that will support and align with at least two of the following key focus areas (examples are provided to guide your application and proposal development):

• Community Engagement
  • Men’s Places could support culturally appropriate engagement of men through:
    • Encouragement of participation and the involvement of men in Men’s places and Men’s Place activities.
    • Contributing to an evidence-base on what works in improving the lives of Northern Territory men.
    • Creating opportunities for social connections for men in their communities.
    • Providing a place of non-judgement and for men to access services.
    • Improving understanding about gender, gender diversity, the drivers of gendered violence and gender inequality.
• Health and Wellbeing
  • Men’s Places could support improved health and wellbeing of men through:
    • Providing access to health and wellbeing information to Territory men and encouraging health seeking behaviours and positive self-care for Territory men.
    • Creating opportunities for greater social connection, peer support and positive mental health outcomes for Territory men.
    • Promoting active and healthy lifestyles, role models and activities.
    • Promote healing and recovery approaches which are strengths, community and trauma based.
• Safety
  • Men’s Places could support community safety through:
    • Promoting respectful relationships and challenging rigid gender behaviours that can cause harm.
    • Promoting positive male role models, positive fathering and grandfathering and celebrating men who have a positive impact on their families and communities.
    • Providing violence prevention activities and messaging in relevant activities.
    • Providing skills that enable men to recognise and challenge harmful or abusive behaviours.
• Economic Security
  • Men’s Places could support improved economic security through:
    • Providing men with the opportunity to learn or develop new skills, gain qualifications or facilitate intergenerational knowledge sharing.
    • Undertaking activities that increase financial literacy and resilience over the life course.
    • Promoting more equal sharing of unpaid and caring responsibilities between genders.
• Leadership and Participation
  • Men’s Places could support leadership and participation in local communities through:
    • Encouraging civic engagement, volunteering and participation in community activities and decision making.
    • Valuing the diversity that each man brings, encouraging diversity and developing leadership and governance skills and experience.
    • No more than 50% of the funding is able to support repairs and maintenance of existing facilities or to purchase tools, equipment and supplies to deliver the proposed program.

Funding Information

• To support Men’s Places the Northern Territory Government will provide $100,000 per annum to support Men’s Places Grants of up to $10,000 per applicant, to support a range of activities such as information sessions, skills development, health and wellbeing programs, education and peer to peer support programs, parenting programs, and equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

• Funding is available to individuals and organisations.
• To be eligible for funding an individual must
  • Have met acquittal requirements for all previous funding (this grant) and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have met acquittal requirements for previous grants from this department and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have met acquittal requirements for all previous Northern Territory Government grants and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have adequately demonstrated that the grant will not duplicate funding already provided under this or other Northern Territory Government funding sources
  • Have completed all required information in the application form and submitted required documentation in support of your application
  • Reside in the NT for the duration of funded activity
• To be eligible for funding an organisation must
  • Be physically located and actively operating in the NT
  • Have met acquittal requirements for all previous funding (this grant) and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have met acquittal requirements for previous grants from this department and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have met acquittal requirements for all previous Northern Territory Government grants and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • Have adequately demonstrated that the grant will not duplicate funding already provided under this or other Northern Territory Government funding sources
  • Have completed all required information in the application form and submitted required documentation in support of your application
  • Have an Australian Business Number (ABN) or, if you do not have an ABN, have a completed Statement by a Supplier form (available from the Australia Taxation Office (ATO) website)
  • Have public liability insurance of at least $10 million
  • Be registered for Goods and Services Tax if your organisation earns $75,000 or more per year
• Types of organisations that are eligible for funding include
  • Be based and registered in the Northern Territory/ or partner with a Northern Territory organisation.
