The Australian High Commission in Kingdom of Tonga is seeking applications for 3rd round of Direct Aid Program, a competitive small grants program funded by the Australian Aid program.
The Direct Aid Program (DAP) is a community development program funded by the Australian Government. The program aims to support projects with a strong development focus that complement Australia’s broader aid program which contributes to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.
In 2019-20, Australian High Commission particularly welcome proposals for projects that address the following needs:
- People with disabilities, women and girls, livelihoods, human rights, environment and climate change, community health, arts and culture, youth and social inclusion.
Supported Projects
In recent years, the Direct Aid Program in Tonga has supported projects including:
- A school library for GPS Pangai, Ha’apai
- A children’s playground next to the BSP carpark in Nuku’alofa
- Community consultations on the rights of LGBTI people in Tonga
- Learning equipment to assist visually impaired students
Grant Information
Grants of up to 8000 pa’anga are available for proposals that can demonstrate a strong benefit to local communities in line with the priorities of the Australian Aid program in Tonga.
To strengthen application, applicants should consider
- How will applicants maximise the number of people that will benefit from their project?
- Can the community make a contribution to support the project (land, material, labour or resources)?
- How can the project continue to provide a benefit to the community after the funding has been spent?
Ineligible Projects
What types of projects are not eligible under the Direct Aid Program?
- Issuing cash grants, cash prizes, grants programs, micro-credit schemes or commercial ventures
- Buying livestock, vehicles, lawnmowers, weed-eaters, or water tanks or fences for individual households
- Improvements to an individual’s house or land
- Any overseas travel
- Routine, recurring running costs and administrative expenses including office rental and utility costs, spare parts, routine maintenance and reports, or staff salaries.
