The Austrian Development Agency (ADA) is inviting Austrian civil society organizations (CSOs) to submit applications for projects on female genital mutilation (FGM) and / or women’s health incl. Family planning (sexual & health care) in accordance with § 3 (2) of the Development Cooperation Act. Reproductive Health – SRH in Sahel and Horn of Africa countries.
Objectives
- Improve access to treatment after FGM such as FGM reversals (defibulation), Management of Health Complications from FGM (pain, complications during childbirth, …), removing scar tissue, psychological support.
- Support the development of policies and legislation and ensure adequate resources to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
- Expand knowledge about the harms of FGM and empower champions (incl. husbands and family relatives, religious leaders) for its elimination.
- Address the trend of medicalization by galvanizing health professionals to view FGM as a human rights violation.
- Integrate FGM responses into sexual and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and child protection services (areas that offer entry points for identifying and supporting girls and women who are at risk or have been subjected to FGM).
- Mainstream FGM into health training programmes, mobilize doctors, nurses and midwives in support of FGM prevention and care, and empower health providers to serve as role models, counsellors and advocates in the effort to end FGM.
- Improve understanding of women’s health issues, gender issues and harmful practices.
- Improve capacities of women’s health/ SRH providers, including removal of attitudinal barriers.
- Improve awareness of and foster access to family planning.
- Increase access to quality SRH and family planning services, including counselling.
- Foster changes in social norms and values related to family planning, gender and women’s health/ SRH.
- Foster active engagement of men and male youth in family planning and women’s health/ SRH.
Target groups
- Women and girls, men and boys, particularly from poor / vulnerable households.
- Government partners (e.g. local authorities, community leaders, officials from health services, Health Extension Workers (HEWs), etc.).
- Religious leaders.
- Health Staff (e.g. doctors, nurses, midwives, etc.) and traditional healers.
- Community-based organisations (CBOs).
Funding Information
- The maximum ADA funding is EUR 300,000 per project .
- The maximum ADA funding rate is 90 percent of the project volume . The applicant will contribute own funds of at least 10% of the project volume. In-kind benefits are not considered own funds.
- The total project costs (ADA funding plus own funds) must amount to at least 300.000, – EUR per project .
- Projects are funded from at least 24 to a maximum of 36 months project duration. Project start in 2018.
Geographial Focus
Project proposals can be submitted for countries in the Sahel and Horn of Africa (Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti).
Eligibility Criteria
- Submitting organizations are invited to submit project proposals for measures against Female Genital Mutilation. Applicant organizations must demonstrate appropriate technical and human resources and cooperation with local organizations.
- Funding is provided for projects that are planned and carried out together with local partner organizations. Cooperation with national stakeholders is a prerequisite and coordination with international actors in the project region is desirable.
