Are you a recognised Belgian civil society organisation or a non-profit organisation and do you want to launch a sustainable and inclusive economic development project in a developing country? Brussels International and hub.brussels are launching a new call for projects, at the initiative of State Secretary for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.
The Brussels-Capital Region (BCR) wants to contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations and more specifically to the global eradication of poverty through sustainable and inclusive economic development.
Theme
- In a globalized world as it exists today, strengthening the capacities of individuals and the improvement of the living conditions of the population of a region of the “South” demand economic development that is both sustainable and inclusive. As part of this theme of the call for projects:
- Economic development: does not necessarily translate into earning more, but by earning better. “Economic development” here means changes economic which allow people, or a group of people, to strengthen their abilities to act on their own lives. Concretely, it can be a economic change which allows, for example, the purchase of a service/good previously inaccessible, to acquire economic autonomy in order to no longer depend on power relations that the person concerned considers negative, make the choice to consume less but while having financial security and/or a legitimate social network that helps avoid poverty, etc. It can also be a socio-political change (capacity building, fight against a social injustice, etc.) having an economic impact.
- Sustainable: means that the project concerned meets the needs of generations present without compromising the ability of future generations.
- Inclusive: means that the project concerned must enable one or more disadvantaged/marginalized categories of the population (by their sexual orientation, their ethnic origin, their age, their social status, their disability etc.) to benefit from new opportunities, to participate in decision-making relating to economic development and share the benefits.
Goals
- This call for projects was created to support sustainable and inclusive economic development projects in developing countries. The projects must be implemented:
- In an urban or semi-urban context.
- In one of the BCR’s three partner regions: City-Province of Kinshasa (DRC), the Region of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (Morocco) and the occupied Palestinian Territory (West Bank and East Jerusalem – the Gaza strip being excluded from the scope of this call).
Funding Information
- In 2024, a budget of € 655,000 is allocated for this call for projects including € 430,000 disbursed in priority to projects taking place in the occupied Palestinian Territory.
- With this call for projects, the BCR wishes to provide support to a maximum number of projects in the range of €10,000 to €125,000
Who is eligible?
- The call for projects is open to recognised civil society organisations as well as other Belgian non-profit organisations (ASBL/VZW). In the latter case, this includes organisations actively engaged in the field of international solidarity as well as associations focusing on economic development.
