The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is seeking concept notes for a project entitled “Improved delivery of seed and soil technologies in Mozambique”.
AGRA is focused on putting smallholder farmers at the center of the continent’s growing economy by transforming agriculture from a solitary struggle to survive into farming as a business that thrives. As the sector that employs the majority of Africa’s people, nearly all small-scale farmers, AGRA recognizes that developing smallholder agriculture into a productive, efficient, and sustainable system is essential to ensuring food security, lifting millions out of poverty, and driving equitable growth across the continent.
Eligible Activities
- Build the capacity of extension agents in the Maputo and Limpopo Corridors to help cassava farmers adopt good agricultural practices that raise productivity (One grant)
- Enhance the capacity of public and private extension service providers to impact farmer groups, commercial and emergent farmers with skills and knowledge needed to increase productivity including adoption of improved cassava varieties and integrated soil fertility management practices. This will be done through
- Design and execute an outreach campaign aimed at raising awareness for improved cassava varieties and use of fertilizers on cassava production through establishment of and farmer field days in Maputo and Limpopo Corridors.
- Ensuring availability of planting material for the demonstrated varieties through emergent and commercial cassava cutting agri-businesses accessing materials from IIAM
- Building capacity of cassava farmers to improve their access to markets and generate higher incomes (One grant)
- Map farmer groups, commercial and emergent farmers selling cassava planting materials and SMEs processing cassava products and assess their capacities to effectively exploit available cassava market opportunities.
- Build agribusiness skills and capacity for farmer groups, commercial and emergent farmers selling cassava planting materials and SMEs processing cassava products to effectively and sustainably access profitable markets. Training will include all aspects of the cassava value chain, from linking farmers to inputs to postharvest handling, storage, quality control, marketing, and access to financial services.
Eligibility Criteria
Interested institutions/organizations must meet the following eligible requirements:
- Grantees must be operational in Mozambique with valid registration documents.
- The organization’s primary business activity must be in Mozambique
- The organization’s registration to do business in Mozambique must be current.
- The organization must be in a sound financial condition.
- The organization must have sufficient existing capability/capacity to perform the proposed work. AGRA may consider limited financial assistance to fund capacity building only if the concept note is determined to be of interest to AGRA.
- The organization must have a demonstrated excellent past performance record.
- The organization must have accounting systems acceptable to AGRA and corporate integrity/ethics.
- The organization must not be excluded from the eligibility to receive AGRA’s donor-provided funds.
