The Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada is inviting proposals for its “Northern Contaminants Program (NCP)” which engages Northerners and scientists in researching and monitoring of long-range contaminants in the Canadian Arctic, that is, contaminants that are transported to the Arctic through atmospheric and oceanic processes from other parts of the world and which remain in the Arctic environment and build up in the food chain.

As the NCP marks its 25th anniversary milestone, it is reaffirming its commitment to scientific excellence and Northern engagement on the issue of long-range contaminants in the Arctic, including a renewed focus on community based monitoring and research, and Indigenous knowledge.

Funding Information

The program funds about $4.1 million in research annually.

Geographical Focus

The geographic focus of the Northern Contaminants Program is Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik (northern Quebec) and Nunatsiavut (northern Labrador).

Eligibility Criteria

Northerners and scientists based in Canada are eligible to apply.
