The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) is pleased to launch a call for proposals for “Community Philanthropy” to support the effective strengthening of participatory, democratic, and grassroots development models of philanthropy in the Americas.
Community philanthropy is an approach to mobilizing development resources by building on communities’ own assets, capacities, and relationships and drawing on pre-existing systems of giving. This increasingly popular and promoted approach seeks to catalyze communities’ capacity to generate and manage funds and other resources at a local level to determine how these should be spent and thus reduce the dependence of community organizations on international funding or foreign aid.

IAF invites proposals from philanthropic organizations with one of these profiles:
- Thematic funds (such as funds focused on the environment, or led by women, or on other specific themes);
- Community and/or territorial foundations; and
- Corporate foundations, networks of philanthropic entities, or other types of community philanthropic organizations working from a perspective that fosters grassroots economic and/or social development.
Funding Information
- IAF accepts proposals for initiatives up to $400,000. The final amount awarded will depend on the scope of the proposed activities and the experience and capacity of the organization(s) to implement them.
- Grant activities may last up to 36 months with the possibility of extension.
Characteristics
Successful proposals will have the following characteristics:
- Mobilize significant counterpart funds and strategic alliances to match IAF funding. Counterpart may be in kind or in cash.
- Demonstrate the organization’s ability to collaborate effectively with other sectors—such as the public, private, and non-governmental sectors—by mobilizing local and/or national resources from its home country and providing grants to grassroots organizations to carry out their projects.
- Encourage communities’ active participation in:
- identifying the problem that the project aims to address;
- choosing the strategy and approach to address it;
- designing the project;
- managing and carrying out project activities; and
- monitoring, evaluating, and learning.
IAF will give priority to proposals that include organizational alliances, provided that the management strategy is clear and precise. Alliances may be public, private, or corporate at any territorial level. Organizations participating in alliances need not have been IAF grantees.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a philanthropic entity based in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a board of directors from the host country.
- Be legally established as a nonprofit organization that directly supports grassroots community-based organizations in its locality with grants and training.
- Show results that last over time.
