The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Madagascar through the Africa Mini grid Program (AMP) project has launched a call for proposals from NGOs/CSOs working in the field of women’s empowerment for capacity building of 20 women in the production of mobile biodigesters and biogas cooking stoves.
UNDP country office in Madagascar aims to contribute through its initiatives to the overall objective of providing access to clean, sustainable and affordable energy to 500 million people, half of whom are women. To this end, the country office is leading a number of projects and initiatives aimed at improving access to modern energy services that can make them more self-reliant. The “Powering Equality” initiative implemented by the national Africa Mini grid Program (AMP) project is an opportunity to improve Malagasy women’s access to clean and affordable energy and to make them autonomous towards structural transformation. This initiative attempts to target vulnerable women furthest from mini-grids by offering them decentralized access solutions to decentralized renewable energy access solutions that complement the inadequacies of mini-grids. This activity will attempt to bridge the gap in access to clean cooking energy for targeted groups of women and create business opportunities for them.
Objectives
- The objective of this call for proposals is to invite national and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as well as Organizations of the Malagasy Civil Society (CSO) to submit their proposal in the field of women’s empowerment through the promotion of domestic and community biogas services and improved cookstoves with adapted biogas.
- Overall objective to be achieved by the Energy for Equality initiative:
- Development of energy solutions for 2 groups of women (at least 10 women per group) through training on manufacturing and maintenance of community biodigesters and mobile domestic biodigesters as well as biogas cooking stoves (from locally available materials at lower cost) for the production and use of domestic biogas to power clean cooking as an energy alternative to biomass (firewood and charcoal).
- Adoption of entrepreneurship tools by targeted groups of women and access to the market for energy products: i) training in entrepreneurship and market opportunities, ii) support for the formation of women in cooperatives to guarantee investments and income; iii) business management training.
Funding Information
- The amounts of proposals must not exceed 35,000 USD for all two (02) sites, and for direct interventions including all costs relating to training and equipment activities at the level of the two regions (the budget includes without limitation limited to this, the purchase of materials for the construction of community and domestic biodigesters, the payment of women trained for their work in training sites, the salaries of key personnel, the transport of materials, etc.).
- The amount requested in the proposal must be proportionate to the administrative and financial management capacities of the organization. In principle, the duration of the project will not exceed four (04) months.
Outcomes
- The proposal prioritizes the following interconnected outcomes:
- Economic empowerment of women by strengthening the capacities of beneficiaries in the manufacturing and maintenance of community biodigesters, or mobile domestic biodigesters as well as biogas cooking stoves;
- Strengthening skills in energy matters aimed at a market with developed services;
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible proposals will be those focused on the principle of empowering women and particularly targeting women as direct and final beneficiaries, by strengthening their competence in the development of energy produced by biogas, so that women can access and engage economic affairs related to biogas services.
