The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Norad are seeking applications for its grant scheme for strengthening civil society in developing countries that have improved the ability and capacity to promote human rights, democracy, equality, environment, climate, agriculture, food security, vulnerable groups and inclusive growth.
Priority Areas
- Interventions that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, including “leaving no one behind”.
- Strengthening of civil society in line with Norad’s principles for support to civil society, including a partnership model where resources and influence are transferred to locally based partner organisations.
- Interventions promoting the realisation of human rights, including the rights of girls and women, sexual and reproductive health and rights and efforts against harmful practices.
- Interventions promoting the rights of vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities and LGBTI persons.
- Interventions promoting good governance, transparency and democratic participation.
- Interventions promoting climate adaptation and food security.
- Interventions promoting inclusive economic growth and job creation.
Funding Information
- It is a prerequisite that support for education remains at a high level, in line with the previously earmarked annual sum of NOK 450 million.
Eligibility Criteria
- The target group(s) for the scheme is:
- Civil society actors in ODA-approved developing countries, as well as groups represented by these and beneficiary groups of planned activities
- Potential grants recipients:
- Norwegian civil society organisations like NGOs, trade unions, faith- and belief-based organisations and sports organisations.
- The applicant must document that the following criteria are met:
- The applicant must be a legal person. Accurate and comprehensive organisational information must be provided.
- The applicant must have proven track record showing the necessary thematic and administrative competence to implement the project. Results from previous projects within the grant scheme’s thematic areas are relevant.
- The applicant must demonstrate a clear understanding of the issues they seek to address and have clear and achievable goals for the initiative.
- The applicant must have an established partnership with, or itself be a civil society actor in the country of intervention.
- The applicant must have their own articles of association and a Board of Governance.
- The applicant must confirm that they have established ethical guidelines for the organisation, which, as a minimum, fulfil the requirements as laid out in Ethical guidelines – Guide for Norad’s grant recipients.
- The applicant must confirm that they have made safety and security assessments for their employees when staying abroad, and initiated necessary measures, for example training, policies, insurance and equipment.
- The applicant organisation must have financial sustainability beyond public funding.
