The Girl Generation is seeking proposals from grassroots organisations, networks and individuals for its “The Girl Generation End FGM Grants Programme” with an aim to build the Africa-led movement to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The purpose of the funds is to accelerate social change to end FGM through communications, advocacy and campaigning.
In late 2015, The Girl Generation obtained funding from the Human Dignity Foundation to implement a small grants programme to support efforts to end FGM in 10 African countries and with these funds, our set up The Girl Generation End FGM Grant Programme.

- Supporting positioning of ending FGM on regional/international agendas
- Supporting youth-led social change
- Movement-building opportunities to engage wider audiences with the issue
- Amplifying/covering/reporting on stories of change

Funding Information
There are two main types of grants available through the programme:
- Activity grants to enable social change to end FGM: grants to grassroots organisations and networks to support activities to end social change. There are three types of activity grants available to organisations and networks:
- Small grants (US$ 4,000 – US$ 10,000)
- Medium grants (US$ 10,000 – US$ 20,000)
- Large grants (US$ 20,000 – US$ 50,000)
- Travel grants to support individuals, networks and grassroots organisations to participate in national, regional and international events related to ending FGM.
- Up to USD $1,500 to support travel to regional and national events
- Up to USD $3,500 to support travel to international events
- Benefits
- Economy class travel using a reasonable route
- Accommodation and incidental costs (provided as a lump sum; in line with The Girl Generation limits, up to $150 a night)
- Cost of conference registration (if applicable)
- Visa costs
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for an activity grant, organisations must:
- Be a local organisation (such as non-government organisations (NGO)/civil society organisations (CSOs), community-based organisations (CBO), etc.) or network (including youth clubs, school clubs, journalist networks, etc.)
- Already be working on ending FGM or a related area (e.g. women’s rights or gender based violence, youth activism or communication for change)
- Be based in Kenya, Nigeria or The Gambia
To apply for travel grant, applicants must:
- Already be working on ending FGM or a related area (e.g. women’s rights or gender based violence, youth activism or communication)
- Be based in Africa and working in a The Girl Generation priority country
- Provide justification for how attending the event will move forward efforts to end FGM.
- Be legally able to travel to the country the event is being held in
- International travel grants will not be approved for:
- Attending conferences as a participant unless a strong justification is provided on how one will benefit from this (this will be reviewed on a case by case basis by The Girl Generation). Other forms of participation are however encouraged and should not limited to the options provided
- Education courses
- Be linked to a grassroots organisation (such as non-government organisations (NGO)/civil society organisations (CSOs), community-based organisations (CBO), etc.) or network (including youth clubs, school clubs, etc.)
- In exceptional circumstances, funding to government representatives might be considered, for example if they are promoting the work of grassroots organisations (this will be reviewed)
- Membership of The Girl Generation is not required, but encouraged
