The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is currently seeking proposals for its program titled- Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR) Partnership to Promote Local Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposure (APPLETREE).
This program’s primary goal is to give partners the resources to build their capacity to assess and respond to site-specific issues involving human exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. The Program helps ATSDR’s partners identify exposure pathways at specific sites; educate affected communities and local health professionals about site contamination and potential health effects; make recommendations to prevent exposure; review health outcome data to evaluate potential links between site contaminants and community health outcomes; and document the effects of environmental remediation on health.
Objectives
The objectives of this program are to:
- identify pathways of exposure to hazardous substances at hazardous waste sites and releases
- identify, implement, and coordinate public health interventions to reduce exposures to hazardous substances which occur at level of health concern; and provide training at the state level to promote and achieve the safe siting of daycare facilities.
Program Outcomes
The program will support the following outcomes:
- A high percentage of community members, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders understand the health risks and ATSDR’s recommendations;
- Regulatory agencies and policy makers adopt and implement site related recommendations within 12 months after completion of site assessment;
- Site related exposures are reduced or eliminated;
- An increased percentage of people are able to protect themselves from site-related hazards; and
- Exposure related to toxic substances are reduced, eliminated, or prevented.
Funds Available
The estimated total budget for this program is $31,500,000.

- State and local governments or their Bona Fide Agents (this includes the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands, American Samoa, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau).
