The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – ERA is offering grants for Programmatic Interventions to Increase Uptake of Influenza and COVID-19 Vaccination among Students Attending Institutions of Higher Education.
Purpose
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to conduct research to investigate the following:
- knowledge and attitudes about influenza and COVID-19 vaccination and mandates among undergraduate students attending Institutes of Higher Education (IHE);
- barriers and factors associated with the likelihood of influenza and COVID-19 vaccine uptake;
- effectiveness of one or more approaches to increase influenza and COVID-19 vaccination coverage among undergraduate students; and 4) cost assessment of the intervention(s). Students attending IHEs are a population at higher risk of infection with influenza viruses and SARSCoV-2 due to unique exposures, including living in dormitories, attending in-person classes, and participating in social activities. Staying up to date with annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines is recommended to reduce the risk of infection by these viruses.
Funding Information
- Budget and Project Period: The estimated total funding (direct and indirect) for the first year (12-month budget period) is $500,000 with individual awards ranging from $400,000 to $500,000 for the first year.
- The estimated total funding (direct and indirect) for the entire project period is $1,500,000. The project period is anticipated to run from 09/01/2023 to 08/31/2026.
Outcomes
At the end of the project period, the award recipient should be able to:
- Describe barriers to, and factors associated with, undergraduate students’ likelihood of getting influenza and COVID-19 vaccination, including, but not limited to, insurance status, recent history of influenza and/or COVID-19 infection, receipt of either influenza or COVID-19 vaccine, and general attitudes about vaccines and vaccine mandates.
- Design, implement, and assess the effectiveness of one or more approaches to increase influenza and COVID-19 vaccination coverage among undergraduate students.
- Describe changes in knowledge and attitudes about influenza and COVID-19 vaccination among undergraduate students at each institute of higher education randomized to the intervention and control arms.
- Describe whether the implemented intervention(s) were feasible and acceptable for undergraduate students and costs of implementation.
- Describe whether the interventions led to greater student influenza and COVID-19 vaccination.
- Make a statement about whether each intervention is recommended, in a modified or unmodified form, to be used widely by similar institutes of higher education.
- As appropriate, develop an implementation plan that can be used by appropriate stakeholders (e.g., health systems, immunization programs, professional associations, institutes of higher education) for scaling up the activity to be used by additional institutes of higher education.
Target Population
- The target population of this research activity is undergraduate students attending 4-year IHEs, half of which have instituted a mandate for influenza or COVID-19 vaccination and half of which have not instituted a mandate(s). Only undergraduate students attending IHEs that do not have a mandate should be included in the randomized control trial. Those attending IHEs with and without mandate(s) in place should participate in the pre-intervention survey and only those attending IHEs without mandates should participate in the post-intervention survey.
- Recruitment of IHEs that are geographically, socio-economically, and racially and ethnically diverse is encouraged. The IHEs selected should, however, have similar key characteristics: 4- year institutes, proportion of students living in on-campus housing, and proportion of students enrolled in in-person classes.
