The Global Support Initiative for Indigenous Peoples and Community – Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCA-GSI) is a global project funded by the German Government, through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), implemented by UNDP-GEF Small Grants Program (SGP).
Responding to COVID-19, ICCA-GSI will support IPLC (indigenous peoples and local communities) to strengthen coping mechanisms in the short term and strengthen their long-term socio-ecological resilience. Grassroots actions and initiatives will be built on principles of self-determination, including indigenous food sovereignty to maintain healthy and reciprocal relationships with land, plants and animals, as well as with other producer organizations and networks.
In line with the SGP Country Program Strategy in Indonesia and the relevant National COVID-19 Response and Recovery Plan, qualified organizations are invited to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. National and local civil society organizations (including community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations and indigenous peoples’ organizations) are encouraged to apply.
Funding Information
- The maximum grant for this AKKM project is USD 50,000. It is advisable to submit requests for grants based on the best estimate of the expenditure required to carry out the proposed activity and not based on the maximum amount.
- Applicants are required to submit a detailed budget estimate.
- Project Duration: 18 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- Communication and sharing of learning in culturally appropriate ways
- Translating and communicating medical and sanitary information about COVID-19 into local languages ?? and everyday language.
- Food production systems: agroecology and agroforestry
- Strengthening a sustainable and bio-friendly food production system in AKKM which focuses on agroecological and agroforestry techniques.
- Transmission of traditional medical knowledge.
- Documentation and transmission of sustainable techniques for harvesting, quality control, and transmission of traditional medicinal practices
- Mapping of areas and demarcation for self-isolation and conservation.
- Mapping and demarcation to improve area zoning, self-isolation procedures, buffer zones, and defense of conservation areas.
- Dissemination of traditional knowledge about fire management.
- Given the increasing threat of forest fires associated with climate change and uncontrolled illegal activities due to the COVID-19 crisis at AKKM, projects will be developed to control forest fires (eg making fire-breaker quarries, using traditional knowledge of “early fire” techniques) adapted with different savanna and forest ecosystems and creating green job vacancies for short term recovery.
- Local economic approach, bio-circular based on reciprocity
- Income-generating activities, food exchange/bartering networks, community-run ecotourism-based businesses, provision of food for at-risk populations, locally made personal protective equipment.
- Organizations
- Locally registered non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
- The organization has a registered local bank account.
- Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) are encouraged to apply through organizations that are registered as local organizations and have bank accounts.
- Organizations should have experience working with indigenous peoples, local communities and understand the issues faced by indigenous peoples, understand ICCA principles and have experience working at the grassroots level.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate commitment to protect and maintain the areas and conservation areas of indigenous peoples and local communities (AKKM);
- Knowledge and awareness of biodiversity conservation efforts at the national level;
- Experience in organizing and holding consultations and capacity building activities with indigenous peoples and fishing communities;
- The lead organization must have the capacity to produce high-quality written reports according to deadlines;
- The lead organization must be familiar with the main issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), especially as it relates to indigenous peoples and local communities and is perceived as an advantage.
