The UN Women has launched the Call for Proposals to Foster Gender-Sensitive Media Practices and Safer Digital Spaces to Advance Women’s Leadership and Political Participation in Nepal.
Key Components
- In response to the pressing need to foster gender-sensitive media practices and establish safer digital spaces that advance women’s leadership and political participation, UN Women has designed this intervention with the following key components:
- A Media Compact and One-Time Signatory Event, bringing together media organizations, journalists, and policymakers to publicly commit to collaborative efforts aimed at promoting gender-sensitive media practices and combating OGBV.
- Journalists training, providing targeted training for journalists to equip them with tools for responsible and inclusive reporting.
- Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) is a growing challenge, increasingly targeting women in politics, journalism, activism, and other leadership roles. With the rise of social media, these threats have expanded, providing perpetrators new tools to harass, exploit, and demean women. Persistent biases continue to undermine women’s leadership ahead of the 2027 elections, with digital spaces further amplifying these barriers in Nepal.
Objectives
- The key objectives of this initiative are to:
- Promote gender-responsive and inclusive governance through:
- Partnering with media to ensure accountable reporting and responsible social media engagement around women in leadership and public life, with a focus on preventing violence against women in the digital space
- Providing tools and training to journalists to ensure accurate and gender-inclusive representation of women in the media

- The budget range for this proposal is USD 26000-30000.
Duration
- June 1st – 1st of May 2026
Methodologies/approaches
- The RP will develop an implementation plan, monitoring and learning plan with clear annual milestones. The RP is encouraged to propose innovative ideas, approaches and strategies in the above proposed three intervention areas based on their past experiences and lesson learned that will contribute to strengthen women’s political leadership and promote gender responsive and inclusive governance.
- The additional methodology to be adopted by the partner agencies include:
- Design the training package in close collaboration with the relevant stakeholders
- Use participatory assessment methodologies and reflective dialogue tools across all assessments and consultations

Competencies
- Technical/functional competencies required:
- Demonstrable organizational experience in working with media to engage women and men parliamentarians, with a strong knowledge of media outlets in Nepal, to advance gender-responsive and inclusive governance.
- Proven technical competencies in application of human rights-based and feminist approaches to advance gender equality and for ensuring their voices and needs as rights-holders.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing programmes on gender equality and women’s empowerment in relation to the media, and in formulating result-oriented programme, monitoring programme based on indicators and quality reporting.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with women, girls and those groups who are economically, socially, culturally excluded and/or marginalized.
- Strong understanding of media and social media in shaping gender narratives and addressing OGBV.
- Knowledge of national and international frameworks on gender, cybersecurity, and digital rights.
