UNDP Kenya through the Climate Promise and funding from UK’s Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) invites local communities and indigenous peoples organized through civil society organizations, community forest associations, or forest-dependent communities to submit proposals for the award of grants in innovative and transformative, informing policy and methodologies that can influence and shape Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) implementation in the forest and land-use sector.
This aim of this call for proposals is to invest in strengthening stakeholder engagement mechanisms and processes in country to include local communities, civil society organizations and Indigenous peoples in NDC implementation. These efforts will also be supported by a regional capacity building effort that raises awareness about the NDC process and facilitates the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC)s in the same.
Activities will also be firmly anchored in the goal of securing the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local community stakeholders, including women and youth, and capitalize on the opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and local communities to contribute to the success of NDC implementation.
Objectives
The objectives of this Grants programme are:
- To enhance and pilot Indigenous Peoples and local communities, including women and youth-led contributions to Kenya’s REDD+ Strategy and NDC implementation.
- To strengthen stakeholder engagement in the REDD+ Strategy implementation and the NDC process.
Thematic Areas
- Scaling up afforestation and reforestation and landscape restoration programmes.
- Enhancing governance and policy implementation to reduce the conversion of forests to other land uses;
- Increase productivity of plantation forests; and
- Enhance efficiency, effective and skills in forest related value chains.
Funding Information
- Proposals with budgets of up to Kes.4,000,000.00 will be considered for the award.
- All activities financed by this Grants programme must be implemented by 30th June 2024.
Fundamental Principles
- Grant applicants are expected to consider the following fundamental principles/guidelines in designing their grant project proposals:
- Submission by indigenous organizations, or civil society organizations working on Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ rights, including omen-led or youth-led organisations.
- Parameters of the project activities: costs/budget, scope, time frame, benefits/impact, risks, and sustainability.
- An inclusive approach that values diversity among youth, women and men;
- Initiatives that are innovative, including nature-based solutions, etc.
- Taking into consideration the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributions to NDC implementation.
Outcomes Areas
- Scale and Speed – Countries have effectively strengthened inclusive and gender-responsive governance and financing mechanisms to enable delivery and tracking of NDC targets across sectors.
- Amplifying Ambition – Countries have established long-term net-zero and climate resilient development pathways aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
- Lasting Inclusivity– Key actors within society are systematically engaged and empowered to contribute to accelerate NDC implementation and long-term net-zero and climate resilient development pathways.
Ineligible Projects
- The following types of project proposals are not eligible for funding:
- Project proposals concerned only or mainly with individual sponsorships for participation in workshops, seminars, conferences, congresses;
- Project proposals concerned only or mainly with individual scholarships for studies or training courses;
- Credit or loan schemes;
- Project proposals which consist exclusively or primarily of capital expenditure e.g. land, buildings, equipment, vehicles, etc.
- Project proposals which do not demonstrate equal treatment for individuals or groups of people on grounds of their gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or lack of them, or their ethnic origin;
- Cash donations;
- Political parties or religious activities;
- Project proposals that support activities that are not in line with the values of the UN or that provide funding for any criminal activities including but not limited to terrorism.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible for a grant, applicants must:
- Be a Kenyan civil society organization or Indigenous People’s organization registered under the Societies Act; Indigenous Peoples organizations who are not registered, may apply through their trusted partner that will act as fiscal sponsor.
- Be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the project, i.e., not acting as an intermediary.
- Have a bank account.
- Women and youth-led organizations, especially Indigenous, are strongly encouraged to apply.
