Applications are now open for the Gold Coast (GC) Creative Spaces Program.
GC Creative Spaces, a City of Gold Coast initiative delivered by the City’s Arts and Culture Unit encourages, enables, and facilitates the connection between creative businesses, practitioners, companies, and City owned spaces.
GC Creative Spaces Program plays a significant part in the vibrant cultural life of the City of Gold Coast. The program promotes and supports traditional and contemporary arts practice and creatives through access to spaces and is a way for creatives to build their practice, develop new work and reach new audiences.
Opportunity
- The City of Gold Coast’s is offering creatives with the opportunity to further advance their practice through the provision of co-working studio space for a 5-month period across four creative spaces.

GC Creative Spaces program is a self-led residency placement whereby creatives have independent access to a studio/office space to grow and support their own practice.
- There are currently 5 co-working studios available with a capacity to house up to 2 to 4 creatives per space for a 5-month period, (mid-February to mid-June 2023).
- Successful applicants will be expected to work collaboratively with City of Gold Coast to promote, document and potentially contribute to a public outcome such as workshop, open studio, exhibition, or artist talk.
Funding Information
- Co-working studio/office space for 5 months. Rent and program expenses to the value of $6500 paid for by the City of Gold Coast
- Access to kitchen and bathroom amenities
- Independent access to studio from 9am to 4pm, 7 days a week
- Arranged access to arts professionals to provide creative practice and career direction advice
Accessing a Space
- Creative Spaces provide up to 24 self-led residency placements per year at 5 different spaces. Placements are open to any creative who is interested in developing their work or practice. Spaces include co working/ office space, wet area studio space, as well as a spaces with access to larger creative development areas.

As part of the program, creatives can connect with others in their field and participate in mentoring and peer dialogue and showcase their practice to the wider community. The following spaces are available.
- Art Sheds – Ormeau Community Centre: Two sheds situation in the grounds of the Ormeau Community Centre. This emerging creative precinct has space for up to four creatives. Take advantage of the larger, open plan space in shed 2 to create large scale works in a wet and a dry workshop. Shed 1 is an airconditioned creative design office space with access to lawn and outdoor area with retractable awning.
- The Garage – Coolangatta Community Space (Danger Den): Bare bone’s art space accommodates two creatives, perfect for large scale work creation situated in the garage of the old Point Danger Scout Den which also has creative co working office space and access to a large hall used primarily creative development. The Space is within walking distance to the beach and Griffith Street precinct.
- The Burrow – Coolangatta Community Space (Danger Den): Shared office space is ideally suited to dance or physical theatre companies or creative practitioners due to the proximity to the larger creative development space. Office users have access to the hall space on a causal basis when not booked out. If longer/ regular times are required, this can be arranged through the Community centres booking system.
- The Southport Bathing Pavilion – Broadwater Parklands – Southport: The heritage listed Southport bathing pavilion has been fully renovated and equipped with office space, open plan studio space. Kitchenette and bathroom amenities. The Pavilion can accommodate up to four creatives.

- visual arts, drawing and illustration
- painting and printmaking
- sculpture and installation
- design, digital and multimedia works
- photography and cross disciplinary works
- physical theatre and dance
- curators
- writers
Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to:
- Gold Coast creative businesses, arts companies
- Individual creative practitioners,
- Groups, collectives and Artist Run initiatives (ARI).
- Must be a Gold Coast resident
- Commit to 5 months studio use
- Commit to attending all studio catch up meetings
- There are no restrictions on age, career stage experience or past involvement in the program (previous participants can apply, however, preference to new creative applicants).
- Applicants must be living on the Gold Coast and preference will be given to first time applicants.
