Community Development through Wash, Livelihoods and Waste Solutions-Peri Urban (Myanmar)

Top WASH Grants: Support for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Projects

Deadline: 29-Jun-25

A new development initiative is calling for applications to support community resilience in peri-urban areas of Yangon through integrated services in water, sanitation, livelihoods, and waste management. The project seeks to address the daily challenges faced by vulnerable communities living in townships like Hlaingtharya, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan), and Thanlyin.

These communities often struggle with inadequate housing, poor drainage systems, limited access to safe drinking water, insufficient sanitation, and waste management issues. They also face a shortage of income opportunities and employment, making it difficult to break the cycle of poverty.

The program plans to establish Community Resource Centers (CRCs) in each of the three target areas. These centers will function as safe, inclusive spaces offering advisory services, vocational training, community forums, and information sharing. The goal is to create hubs for skills-building and local engagement that strengthen social and economic foundations.

One of the key outcomes is to improve access to essential services. Around 15,000 people in Thanlyin will gain access to crucial information on basic services. In total, 30,000 residents across the three townships will benefit from improved access to clean drinking water. Additionally, 125 households will see an increase in income through financial services and group-based support systems, and 1,000 of the most vulnerable individuals will gain improved sanitation facilities.

The initiative also focuses on boosting livelihoods, particularly for women. One hundred women are expected to complete training programs in alternative income-generating skills. Waste management will also be upgraded, with over 10,000 residents gaining access to improved community waste collection services.

The service contract for this initiative is expected to begin in July 2025 and will run through June 30, 2026. The selected organization will be responsible for implementing all components of this transformative program.
