Ontario is inviting applications for the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund, an initiative of the Ministry of Mines (the ministry) that intends to strengthen the critical minerals sector by supporting projects that will stimulate investments in Ontario’s critical minerals supply chain and protect the province’s economic interests.
Rapidly changing technologies are increasing global demand for critical minerals that are central to strategic industries such as national defense, emerging computer and telecommunications technologies, as well as the clean technologies that will support a low carbon future.
The CMIF aims to support projects involving research, development and/or commercialization of innovative technologies, techniques, processes and solutions helping increase exploration, mining, development, production and processing of critical minerals within Ontario. It will also enhance collaboration between industry, academia, start-ups, and research and development firms to encourage innovation in the critical minerals sector.
Key Priorities
- The CMIF is a fund designed to support critical minerals development which is a subset of the mineral sector, through investments in research, development, and/or commercialization of innovative technologies, techniques, processes and solutions relating to one or more key priority areas:
- Battery supply chain
- Deep exploration and mining
- Recovery of minerals
- Other innovative projects that support the critical minerals sector
Funding Information
- Eligible recipients can receive up to $500,000 per project to cover 50% of eligible costs.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Applicant is a private-sector business; or, a private sector business collaborating with a public sector academic or research institution / non-profit organization or association. For projects involving collaboration between two or more entities, one entity must be the lead Applicant and be the funding recipient.
- The project will take place in Ontario
- The project involves research, development and/or commercialization of innovative technologies, techniques, processes or solutions that relates to one or more of the Key Priorities.
- The project is not receiving funding from any other program of the provincial government of Ontario.
