FHI 360 is seeking applications from South African non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for a one-year grant in support of the Bridge Project: Support, Prepare and Engage Vulnerable Youth (Bridge Project).
This initiative is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and managed by FHI 360.
The aim of this project is to support, prepare and engage vulnerable youth, especially those who were formerly classified as OVC, so that they are better able to access economic and social opportunities, live healthy lives, and contribute to their individual, household, and community resilience in the PEPFAR Scale Up Districts in South Africa. This activity will seek to expand on youth development programs for OVC youth (ages 15-24) in City of Johannesburg (Regions A, C & E).
Objectives
Project objectives include:
- To increase the number of youth between the ages of 15-24 years old who receive a package of evidence-based socio-economic interventions that equip them with the assets and skills they need to negotiate livelihood choices and health behaviors that lead to better health outcomes and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on this vulnerable group. A focus on ensuring that adolescent girls access a package of services that aim to reduce HIV prevalence by layering a basket of psychosocial, economic and sexual reproductive health services to the most vulnerable and “at risk” girl is required.
- To improve the wellbeing of the households of vulnerable youth by increasing their ability to better prevent and cope with shocks (social, health, and economic) and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on the family.
- To advocate and mobilize community support and resources to increase youth access to information, networks, new technologies that build linkages to professional and community networks and reduce social exclusion through a youth engagement community of practice that will support ‘meaningful youth engagement’; the development of measurement indicators and contribute to building the evidence, resources, and tools. (10% of the budget)
Eligibility Criteria
One aspect of this APS is to contribute towards capacity building of local (indigenous) South African organizations and as a result:
- Only applications from bonofide South African organizations will be considered. For purposes of this APS an “indigenous South African organization” is defined as an organization:
- Registered and incorporated under laws of the Republic of South Africa o Based and conducts its business within borders of the Republic of South Africa
- With majority of its board of directors and decision-making structures resident in the Republic of South Africa.
- The local organisation should have full autonomy in programmatic operations.
- The applicants should have experience in youth and economic empowerment initiatives.
- Applicants may be a community-based organization, faith-based organization, civil society organization, etc.
- Organizations that already have a presence or are currently working in some of the project geographical areas.
