The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is pleased to announce a new program entitled “Financial Literacy for Mexican Women” whose aim is to break the cycle of violence by teaching women and girls the financial skills necessary to be independent and avoid entering or remaining in abusive relationships for economic reasons.
Women and girls need to learn basic financial skills so that they can manage their own finances, establish positive credit histories, and become eligible for loans necessary to pursue an education or to make larger purchases like a home or car.
The project aims to encourage more women to join the formal Mexican workforce and play a more active role in Mexican society.
Program Goals
- Provide financial literacy training to women and girls to promote their independence and provide them with greater opportunities.
- Empower women and girls in abusive relationships to remove themselves from the situation and be able to support themselves financially.
- Prevent women and girls from entering into abusive relationships as a means to achieve financial security.
- Increase the percentage of women in the formal Mexican economy and workforce.
Funding Information
- The approximate total funding is $75,500.
- The initial period of performance will be for 18 months.
Focus Activities
- Conduct needs assessment of Mexican at-risk women and teenage girls to determine what financial skills they lack and what is needed to be independent.
- Create a comprehensive curriculumin Spanish to teach women, especially at- risk women, financial literacy and independence.
- Create a comprehensive curriculumin Spanish to teach girls (ages 14-18) financial literacy and independence.
- Both courses should use engaging examples, charts, images, facts, videos, quizzes, games, or activities to help teach the principles and make the program interesting. Content can be shared between the two courses, when applicable, but each should address the specific needs of the user.
- Create a website and mobile app (Android and iOS) to deliver the program to the target users.
- Create an administration function on the website and mobile app to track users’ progress, receive feedback and suggestions, and monitor effectiveness of program.
- Maintain the website and apps for one year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational and research institutions;
- Foreign public entities;
- U.S. not-for-profit/non-governmental organizations (NGOs) subject to section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. tax code,
- Foreign not-for-profits/NGOs/social enterprises.
- All submissions must be in English.
