StopWaste is currently accepting applications for the Food Waste Reduction Grants Program. The goal is to prevent edible surplus food from being generated or going to compost or landfill and instead ensure its highest and best use—to feed people.
In addition to addressing the issue of food insecurity, grant-funded projects conserve natural resources and prevent greenhouse gas emissions by preventing food from going to waste and keeping it out of landfill. Also eligible for funding are projects that eliminate the wasting of edible food through product or process redesign.
The Food Waste Prevention & Recovery Grant Focus Area provides funding for innovative projects that incorporate activities that prevent food from going to waste and/or recover edible surplus food to feed people through food donation.
Project goals
- Prevent surplus food from being generated.
- Put the food to its highest and best use.
- Send less edible surplus food to compost or disposal.

- Amount Up to $20,000 per grant request.
Who can apply
This grant is available to nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Projects must be:
- Located in Alameda County.
- Prevent and/or recover surplus edible food generated or disposed of in Alameda County.
Requirements
- PROPOSED PROJECTS MUST:
- Be based in Alameda County, primarily focus on preventing surplus food from being generated or diverting surplus edible food to feed people in Alameda County, and can include educational activities targeting Alameda County residents or businesses as a secondary activity.
- For Food Recovery grants, staff handling recovered food must have current ServSafe Certification or equivalent safe food handling certification.
- Proposed projects must not duplicate existing StopWaste programs or services, please review StopWaste budget document that includes details on all Agency current programs and services.
- Education and outreach projects are expected to estimate the number of people educated.
- Projects requiring the purchase or upgrading of equipment must have the funding and infrastructure needed to complete the purchase and installation before the end of the grant agreement (within 12 months).
- APPLICANTS MUST
- Be either a non-profit or business that has a valid 501c3 and/or business license.
- Not be a school. Public and Private schools and municipalities are not eligible. For schools related support, contact Angelina Vergara, StopWaste Schools Programs Manager.
- Not use a Fiscal Sponsor unless the Fiscal Sponsor is specifically set up to offer their legal and tax-exempt status to applicant with a fee-based contractual arrangement. You must receive approval to utilize a Fiscal Sponsor from StopWaste prior to submittal of the application.
- Must maintain insurance that meets Agency minimum criteria.
- Be in compliance with all federal, state and local land use, regulatory and permit requirements.
- Contact their grant manager to assess if they are eligible for additional funding if they have current, open grants with StopWaste.
- Applicants will be expected to quantify or estimate the reduction of surplus edible food through prevention, reuse, recovery/donation, or re-distribution in actual pounds (lbs). If your organization does not already record weights of recovered or donated food, please include a line item in your budget to purchase an appropriately sized weighing scale for your operation.
- Have matching funds available if the project budget exceeds grant request.
- Secure funding for building upgrades, construction or general infrastructure needs not directly related to food donation equipment requested for funding.
