The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme is seeking proposals to provide communities and civil society organizations in developing and transition countries with grants to enable them to implement projects in the focal areas of climate change, biodiversity, sustainable forest management, land degradation, international waters, and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)/chemicals.
These community-based projects must meet environmental objectives while simultaneously supporting poverty reduction and local empowerment objectives.
The Knowledge Fair is an important modality which aims to meet the capacity building objective of the programme. It seeks to enhance and strengthen capacities of non-governmental organisations/community-based organisations (NGOs/CBOs) to engage in consultative processes, apply knowledge management to ensure information flows, implement convention guidelines, and monitor and evaluate environmental impacts and trends. The Knowledge Fair is an efficient mechanism to network and share experiences among the SGP grantees while consolidating their capacity in influencing the policy development processes through participation in events with key influential individuals or institutions.
The Knowledge Fair will seek to enable grantees and key stakeholder to network, share experiences and lessons learned and showcase best practices from SGP projects to promote the replication and scaling up of results for greater policy influence, as well as to promote sustainability and mobilize resources for community initiatives.
Objectives of the Knowledge fair
- Increased awareness of GEF SGP country programme and its strategic objectives and results;
- Promotion of new thematic areas for Barbados country programme in Operational Phase 6 (community landscape and seascape conservation/ridge-reef, climate smart innovative agroecology, low carbon energy access co-benefits);
- Exchange of experiences between NGOs/CBOs working to address global environmental issues in order to facilitate exchange of knowledge and replication of best practices;
- Promote and strengthen partnerships among key stakeholders such as, NGOs/CBOs, international funding agencies, government & local authorities, the business community, and local communities.
Budget Information
- The funding for the Knowledge Fair should fall within the SGP global and country programme guidelines. It is advisable that the grants do not exceed US$25,000.
- A detailed budget breakdown should be provided by the proponent including all estimated costs for organizing the Knowledge Fair, including venue, travel, meals/refreshments, learning/supporting materials and equipment, resource persons etc.
Expected Outputs
- Facilitation and coordination of the Knowledge Fair (based on checklist provided by SGP), inclusive of list of the grantees in attendance, organization of information sessions to enable grantees to share experiences, successes and challenges associated with project implementation for establishing linkages and networking
- Proposal for the execution of activities, including preparation of supporting materials (e.g. guidance notes, toolkits, posters, brochures, seminars and videos). Supporting material should reflect results of the programme under country modality
- Successful organization and outreach to promote GEF SGP vision, objectives and understanding of its focal areas through the development of adequate supporting material;
- A publication based on case studies of completed projects is produced and distributed.
- A site visit of at least two (2) SGP Projects are arranged, in close proximity to the venue where participants can observe results on the ground.
- The inclusion of government partners and private sector agencies with a mandate that seeks to address global environment issues in the exhibition
- Final report documenting knowledge and lessons exchanged and presented during the fair and reporting on the implementation arrangements and results and including a detailed financial report.
Eligibility Criteria
- Only legally registered national or local CSOs can submit proposals although international CSOs can be their support partners.
- Proponents should demonstrate experience in similar or related work/projects.
- However, in case of capacity limitations, the selected entity could, at its own discretion, outsource some services from third parties;
- In the event the CBO/NGO decides to outsource the services, the GEF-SGP shall however not be responsible for nor enter into any correspondence, negotiations or agreements whatsoever with third parties.
