The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) / Global Environment Facility (GEF) / Microfinance Program (GEF/PMF) informs local NGOs and community-based associations they are launching a call for project proposals of environmental conservation which aim to safeguard the general environmental interests through the implementation of grassroots initiatives, which initiatives also generate local interests.
Organizations / Associations submitting projects must be community-based organizations or a local NGO approved and recognized by the authorities and must be based in the area of action of the proposed projects. Local community-based associations are given priority for submitting projects. These associations or local NGOs must be Organizations aiming to promote the conservation of natural resources while at the same time improving the standard of living of the local population.

- Other sites outside the landscapes
Funding Information
The GEF/PMF approach is based on assumptions that can adequately address global environmental issues where local people are involved and small grants (maximum USD 50,000 per project) are provided. Local communities can undertake activities, which will produce a significant impact on the standard of living of the local population and on the environment in general.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Local Organization / Local Association tenderer must be a Grassroots Community Organization (CBO) or an approved and recognized local Burundian NGO, an institution involved in initiatives at the community level, aimed at promoting the conservation of natural resources by improving at the same time the standard of living of the local population.
- The GEF / PMF only finances projects in the environment sector whose priority areas are:
- Conservation of Biodiversity;
- The fight against the effects of Climate Change;
- Protection of international waters;
- Soil conservation;
- Reduction of the impact of Persistent Organic Pollutants.
- Project activities submitted to the GEF/PMF must relate to at least one of the GEF/PMF priority areas. Otherwise, the project cannot be funded by the GEF/PMF. Projects dealing with more than one area and those presenting links between these different areas concerned are of great interest to the GEF / SGP.
- The proposed activity should reflect the general interests of the environment by:
- The potential for replicability;
- The ability to achieve significant impacts beyond the time and area in which the beneficiary community is located.
- The possibility of adoption of the activities by the public at large.
- Projects which develop partnerships between different actors and other groups and which also develop co-financing possibilities are particularly attractive to the GEF/PMF.
- The project must be feasible and sustainable. This should be achieved in particular through:
- Self-financing, mobilization of resources (financial and technical) from other sources and/or
- Community contribution to the project (in kind, cash, labor).
- Projects taking into account the gender component, youth and indigenous people or local and vulnerable populations in order to improve the capacities of these target communities and meet their needs are encouraged.
- Priority will be given to projects that respond to the national environmental strategy. The project must be technically and financially viable, relevant in terms of the cost/feasibility ratio and must have an institutional framework for implementation. The project implementation period must not exceed (18 months).
- Projects must aim at development but not research. Projects should prioritize the needs of local communities in addition to GEF/SGP priority areas
- The information related to the project must show the references.
- The project to be tendered must show evidence of the participation of the target community in the design, implementation and management of the project. The interests of the project must be directed directly to the beneficiary communities. The project must come up with a monitoring /evaluation plan which must be carried out by all project stakeholders.
- The following projects are not eligible for grants:
- Projects that do not cover any focal area;
- Training, capacity building, education or awareness projects without concrete actions in any focal area.
