The Global Fund for Community Foundation (GFCF) is inviting concept notes for a two-year grants and learning programme aimed at understanding and supporting the work of European community philanthropy organizations (CPOs) on migration and refugees in their communities. The programme builds on an initial GFCF convening on the topic held in Brussels, January 2016.
The purpose of these short-term grants will be to support (both programmatically and institutionally) the work of individual CPOs that are responding in one way or another to the migrant situation, and to begin to draw a map of the range and scale of different activities around refugees, asylum seekers and migrants (both irregular and undocumented) in which European community philanthropy is engaged.
Focus of Grants
Grants will be awarded to support the following objectives:
- To strengthen the efforts of CPOs in their use of small grants and other forms of support to community-initiated projects around the arrival, transit and/or longer-term integration of refugees, asylum seekers, migrants (particularly in combination with advocacy efforts and achieving change at the local level);
- To strengthen the capacities and profile of CPOs as effective and trusted grassroots grantmakers and vehicles for local giving, as well as supporting their abilities to engage with marginalized groups;
- To increase the profile and connectedness of community foundations and other local philanthropic institutions as vehicles for community-driven development and actors and facilitators around issues of cross-cultural understanding, social justice and inclusion.
Funding Information
- Grants will be in the range of U.S. $8,000 – $15,000.
- The grant period will be from spring 2017 – spring 2018.
- Grant recipients will be invited to participate in a learning network across the cohort of grantees. In addition to grants, the GFCF will organize at least one convening plus other learning opportunities during the grant period, aimed at promoting learning between practitioners.
Eligible Grant Activities
- Applicants are encouraged to develop grant activities which can serve externally to:
- Encourage communities to drive their own initiatives and/or better engage with current issues around refugees and migrants in Europe;
- Unlock philanthropic resources and assets within and across different parts of the community.
- And internally, grants may contribute to the overall institutional development of the grantee organization (including its community outreach, grantmaking expertise, inclusive governance, management and decision-making structures, constituency development for this work, fund development and sustainability, etc.).
Eligibility Criteria
- Community philanthropy organizations or similar types of institutions including community foundations, women’s funds, grassroots grantmakers, national public foundations, etc. Applicants should be grantmakers who are mobilizing resources and/or attempting to build a culture of philanthropy in their communities. - Organizations based in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia or Slovenia. Those based in other European countries may be considered if a compelling case is made.
- Organizations that already work with, or are developing plans to work with, refugees, asylum seekers and (both irregular and undocumented) migrants in their community.
