The Embassy of Japan in Maldives has launched the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme to provide flexible and quick support to comparatively small-scale development projects which aim to improve the social well-being of people at the grassroots level.
Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme is part of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) since 1989. The Government of Japan provides support to non-profit organizations that are engaged in socio-economic development in the Maldives.
Priority Sectors
- Priority is given to the following sectors:
- Basic education (preschool to class eight, adult literacy)
- Primary health (population welfare, reproductive health)
- Vocational training/Skill development
- Special education (education/training for handicapped, orphans, etc.)
- Agriculture (irrigation system, etc.)
- Public welfare/Basic infrastructure (drinking water supply, sanitation, road, bridge, electricity, etc.)
- Environment
Funding Information
- In principle, GGP funds one project up to 10,000,000 (ten million) Japanese Yen, (or about 73,000 (seventy-three thousand) United States Dollars).
- Projects must be completed within one year from the day when a Grant Contract is signed.
Eligibility Criteria
- Non-profit organizations falling into the following categories:
- Non-Governmental Organizations
- Community-Based Organizations
- Medical Institutes (e.g. Hospitals, Health Centers, etc.)
- Educational Institutes (e.g. Schools)
- Local Governments (e.g. Atoll Councils, Island Councils)
- Individuals and for-profit organizations are not eligible.
Ineligible
- Operating expenses:
- staff salary
- electricity and water consumption
- rent for a home or office
- fuel/gas for vehicles
- consumables (supplies, etc.)
- equipment for the proponent’s office (e.g. photocopy machines, personal computers, printers, fax machines, telephones, etc.
- Social preparation or mobilization expenses
- Working Capital for livelihood or income-generation projects.
- Purchase of food and medicines except for emergency relief and/or
- medical operations
- Animal dispersal
- Purchase of land
- Scholarships
- Equipment for rent for income generation
- Fund research and /or project conceptualization
- Fund missionary projects, political activities or activities related to elections, commercial projects, and projects supporting specific doctrines or ideologies, or military projects
- Payment for VAT, customs and duties, registration/license/certification fees, etc.
- Purchase of vehicles except for special purposes (i.e. ambulance, garbage truck, fire engine, etc.)
- Purchase of personal computers and books for any use.
