The World Wide Fund for Nature-Kenya (WWF-Kenya) is calling for proposals for grants for climate change-related interventions for selected national and county organizations (CBOs, FBOs, CSOs, Youth & Women Groups).
WWF-Kenya is a locally registered nongovernmental conservation organization; an affiliate of WWF International – one of the world’s largest independent conservation organizations with an active network in over 100 countries.
The overall approach of the programme is to work with civil society organizations to build widespread societal support for locally shaped climate solutions through an inclusive and rights-based approach. This includes building a broad-based climate alliance at country level, bridging divides (urban-rural, gender, youth) that amplifies voices in new unusual ways. In addition, it will influence county, national and global policies and financial flows (e.g. climate finance, private sector investments) in support of these locally shaped solutions.
Goals
- Thriving Wildlife: Populations of priority terrestrial and marine species are stable or increasing.
- Functioning Habitats: Terrestrial (Forests and Rangelands), freshwater and marine ecosystems / habitats within priority places are secured, extended, protected, restored and are climate resilient.
- People Benefitting: Environmentally sustainable, climate responsive and smart, rural livelihoods and economies deliver improvements in social wellbeing.
- Drivers
- Footprint Greened: This responds to the climate change emergency: The impact of infrastructure and production on climate, habitats, fisheries and wildlife is reduced, a low carbon development pathway is pursued and communities and ecosystems are more resilient to climate change through climate adaptation and mitigation.
- Policy Change Secured: Key policies, legislations and standards are implemented to create an enabling environment for Climate responsive and Climate smart sustainable Natural Resources Management and Governance.
Pillars/Outcomes
The programmes main strategic interventions are centered around the following three pillars/outcomes:
- Mutual capacity strengthening for co-creating alternative scaled climate solutions
- Agenda setting and movement in climate action through amplified storytelling
- Joint lobbying and advocacy to make policy and financial flows responsible to locally shaped climate solutions
- The above pillars have been contextualized to Kenya as below:
- Diverse civil society is collaborating on a shared agenda and co-creating scaled solutions that benefit people and nature.
- Amplified citizens voices shape public debate on the just transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient futures
- Civil society contributions to climate solutions are taken into account in policy, practice and budget allocations in Kenya
Funding Information
- The grant amount indicated is for year 1.
- Climate-Conservation nexus grant: This grant will target organizations working in the conservation sector to address climate change driver that is impeding conservation efforts with more emphasis on Nature Based Solutions (NbS)- (Euro 35,000)
- Advocacy grant: This grant will target organizations working on the intersectionality of climate change and other sectors such an energy or climate change as a core thematic area of engagement as well as climate Justice (Euro 40,200)
- Youth grant: This grant will target youth organizations working on issues of climate change as part of their core mandate. (Euro 30,200)
- Indigenous organizations grant: This grant will target organizations working with indigenous communities and other vulnerable communities working on addressing climate change among the communities as they key objective. Preference will be given to organizations led by members of the indigenous communities. (Euro 30,200)
Eligibility Criteria
- Locally registered non- governmental organizations operating at national and/or County level
- Coalitions, networks, consortiums, and alliances with a proven track record of working on climate change issues at local or national level with alignment to the three main outcomes of the project and have sufficient program and financial management experience.
- Organizations must have a clean human rights record.
- Applicant with ability to link to and mobilize larger networks and unusual alliances or capacity to access, mobilize, convene, and influence power holders
- It will be considered favorable if the coalitions/organizations is/are:
- Have prior experience aligned to WWF-Kenya goals and drivers.
- Led by or who work with women groups, youth, persons with disabilities, or other marginalized groups.
- Willing to collaborate with other organizations with a common interest but may not necessarily work in the same sector for greater impact.
- International organizations are not eligible for this call.
