Grants to support NGOs working on Women’s Participation and Leadership in Syria

The United Nations Women’s Peace & Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) has launched a call for proposals in Syria to support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on women’s participation and leadership in humanitarian and crisis planning and response, as well as those working to ensure the protection of women and girls — enhancing their safety, security and mental health and making sure their human rights are respected in the aftermath of the February 2023 earthquake.

Objectives and Purpose

• With the overall goal of contributing to peaceful and gender equal societies, and aligned to UN Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, the purpose of this Call for Proposals is to provide grants to women and young women’s non-governmental organizations in areas impacted by the Earthquake in Syria that focus on humanitarian response, protection of women and girls, and socio-economic recovery, participation and leadership of women and young women in crisis and humanitarian contexts, particularly those who are forcibly displaced and other groups of women and girls at higher risks of vulnerability.
• The targeted areas for the call for proposals include those affected by the earthquake including Aleppo, Hama, Lattakia, Tartous and Homs Governorates.
• Specifically, the Call for Proposals contributes to the following Impact Areas:
  • Impact Area 3: Strengthening women’s participation and leadership in planning and responding to humanitarian crisis
  • Impact Area 5: Enhancing the safety, security and mental health of women and girls

Funding Streams

• WPHF seeks to fund qualifying local organizations in Syria through the following funding streams:
  • Programmatic funding: 30,000 USD to 200,000 USD
    • To finance programmatic activities of NGOs aimed at:
      • Strengthening women’s participation and leadership in planning and responding to humanitarian crisis (in line with WPHF impact area 3); and
      • Enhancing the safety, security and mental health of women and girls (in line with WPHF impact area 5).
  • Institutional funding: 2,500 USD to 30,000 USD
    • To reinforce the institutional capacity of women’s rights and women-led organizations/NGOs working on the implementation of the Women, Peace Agenda to ensure they are able to sustain themselves and to improve their impact (in line with WPHF impact area 1).

Duration

• CSOs project duration may be up to a maximum of 12 months.

Location

• This call for proposal will fund qualifying projects in the Syrian governorates of:
  • Aleppo
  • Lattakia
  • Hama
  • Tartous
  • Homs
• The projects can focus on one or several governorates. Projects outside the geographical focus will not be accepted.

Eligibility Criteria

• International, national, regional or local/grassroots women or young women led, women’s rights, youth rights, feminist, or non-governmental organizations are eligible to apply.
• Women’s Rights or Feminist Organization: The organization’s official mission/vision statement must reflect its commitment to addressing multiple/intersecting forms of discrimination and advancing gender equality and women’s rights. The organization must aim to address the underlying drivers/systems/structures, including patriarchy and gendered power dynamics, and work to transform these.
• Women-Led Organization: must be headed by a woman as director/head of organization.
• Youth Focused Organization: To be considered “youth focused”, the organization’s core mission/vision must focus on supporting the social, economic and political participation of young women and young men and addressing multiple/intersecting forms of discrimination against young women and men. Specific attention to youth focused organizations supporting young women, advancing gender equality and peacebuilding will be given.
• Young Women Led Organization: must be headed by a young person aged between 18 – 29 years’ old who serves as director/head of organization.

Ineligibility Criteria

• The following are not eligible to apply for a grant:
  • Government agencies or institutions;
  • UN agencies or UN Country Teams;
  • Private individuals;
  • Private sector entities;
  • Universities, Think Tanks or Education or Research Institutions
