The Regional Hub for Southern Africa of the Dutch Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries (Hivos Foundation) as the grants manager for the Norwegian funded Cultural Fund for Malawi (CFM is seeking proposals from interested civil society organizations in the arts and cultural sector).
The CFM stands on the notion that Freedom of Expression, Cultural Rights and the participation of cultural practitioners in democratic processes and other arenas that facilitate critical debate are essential if people are to form their opinions and become engaged in any genuine democratic development.
Eligibility Criteria
This is an open call for the various strands in the arts and cultural sector such as film, design, craft, fashion, music, photography, creative writing etc. Grants are provided to eligible independent civil society organizations including rights holder associations, cultural and arts organizations, arts and cultural practitioners based in Malawi and based on the following criteria:
- strong focus on promotions of cultural rights and freedom of expression;
- strong collaboration, that is, organizations able to initiate or strengthen collaborations, strategic partnerships, networking and peer learning through jointly implemented projects or other such strategies
- use of strategies that strengthen the role of women as professionals in the cultural sector in different positions (i.e. those who articulate strategies for engaging with women and girls at the different levels of the organization).
Selection Criteria
The following criteria will be used to assess proposals:
- Capacity to implement,
- Financial position/strategic use of financial resources,
- Relevant networks/partners and constituencies,
- Effectiveness/impact of proposed action on CFM objectives,
- Quality of planning of activities and resources,
- Risk management,
- Track record,
- Strong focus on promotions of cultural rights and freedom of expression,
- Strong collaboration, that is, organizations able to initiate or strengthen collaborations,
- Use of strategies that strengthen the role of women as professionals in the cultural sector in different positions,
- Innovative ideas will highly be rated.
Organizations, Institutions and individuals interested to apply for the small grants should submit proposals as follows:
- Brief profile of the organization clearly outlining past or existing initiatives in freedom of expression through similar or related projects.
- Outline the approach that will be used to deliver the identified output(s) which should involve:
- A well – articulated theory of change
- Identifying the approach and strategies
- Indicating the activities that will be implemented and the geographical coverage of the activities
- A proposed budget of not up to USD 35,000.00
Women led organizations will have an added advantage and are encouraged to apply.
