The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) is seeking applications for its Human Rights and Equality Grants Scheme 2022-23 to provide grant funding to bodies to carry out certain activities to promote human rights and equality in Ireland.
The successful projects will build understanding and leadership; empower people and communities who face the greatest barriers to advocate for their rights and be involved in the decisions that affect them; and to help place human rights and equality at the centre of legislation, policies and practice.
Themes
- The grants scheme will support projects in two thematic areas:
- Advancing Greater Economic Equality
- Supporting compliance with the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty
Priorities
- In its Strategy Statement 2022-24, the Commission sets out five strategic priorities.
- The focus of this year’s grant scheme will be supporting projects under two of those priorities:
- Strategic Priority One: Economic Equality. Under the Economic Equality theme, the Commission will be specifically supporting projects that contribute to advancing greater economic equality in relation to one or a combination of these topics: housing/accommodation, employment, income or carers;
- Strategic Priority Five: Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty. Under this Priority, the Commission’s focus will be to fund projects that support compliance with the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty (the Duty).
Funding Information
- This year there is €400,000 available under two strands. €350,000 is available for Strand One and €50,000 is available for Strand Two.
- Strand One provides for small grants of up to €6,000 and general grants of up to €20,000 to all civil society organisations working to promote human rights and equality.
- Strand Two is new and provides grants of up to €5,000 to local civil society organisations working to promote human rights and equality.
Approaches & Outcomes
- The Grants Scheme will support approaches under Theme A and B that aim to achieve one or more of the following outcomes:
- Strengthened advocacy and organising capacity
- Increased awareness and understanding
- Foster changes in attitudes and behaviours
- Increased evidence to advocate for human rights and equality based legislation, policies, strategies, practices and service delivery
- Improved collaboration between rights-holders/communities and public bodies (duty bearers)
Eligibility Criteria
- Grants are open to civil society organisations, rights-holder and community led groups, and trade unions from across the country, who can bring forward proposals on empowering people to understand and claim their rights.
- This includes people at risk of discrimination protected under the nine grounds of Ireland’s equality legislation: gender, civil status, family status, age, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion, membership of the Traveller community and people at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
