The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is seeking proposals to implement a project on “Green Technologies to Facilitate Development of Value Chains for Perishable Crops and Animal” with an aim to strengthen the capacities of smallholders to contribute to food security and nutrition, by sustainably reducing post-harvest losses, while enhancing market opportunities for their produce.
Objectives
- Review key constraints that contribute to post-harvest losses for fresh produce (milk, fish, and horticulture crops in target countries).
- To identify, adapt, and pilot global innovations in off-grid cold chain and value adding green technologies. Technologies will include solar powered chillers and freezers, thermal exchange and storage facilities; and biogas refrigeration. In addition, identify potential commercial producers of technologies for scaling up.
- Capacity building of organised smallholder farmers to access the adapted appropriate technologies
- Evaluate and disseminate results of pilots and identify policy requirements for scaling up
- Prepare road maps in selected countries to promote and support local technology value chains with a focus on long-term sustainability
- Policy, legal, and regulatory environment for post-harvest green technologies development and sustainability in selected developing countries recommended
- Best practice guidance material for donors, policy makers, regulators and implementers developed, disseminated, and used to contribute to international dialogue on smallholder agriculture development.
- Lessons learned documented and widely disseminated
Grant Information
The approved grant will be awarded to a lead organisation (which could form part of a consortium) selected as grant recipient in the amount of up to USD 2,200,000.
Eligibility Criteria
- The recipient can be a public or a private sector entity. Governments and government agencies of developed Member States and non-Member States are not eligible.
- Non-profit, nongovernmental organizations in non-Member States are eligible only if a specific waiver is granted by the President.
- This is an open invitation to submit a proposal. Each institution can decide to submit alone or jointly with other partner(s) – including those who have not expressed interest. In the case of a joint proposal, the lead institution – who will enter into a legal agreement with IFAD – should be clearly identified and roles and responsibilities of the other partners be explicitly stated.
- If the lead partner is a non-governmental organisation, partnering with a private sector entity for the development of the technologies is a must. In this case, the proposal should clearly indicate the amount of co-financing that the private sector party is committing to the project.

- This expression of interest has to include a one-page cover letter, stating the submitting institution(s)’:
- Name and registration country
- Experience in green technologies for fresh produce handling
- Experience in working in the target countries (Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe)
