Immigrants Rising is offering SEED Grant for California residents who are starting or growing a business/nonprofit in California that addresses a social problem or community need.
Immigrants Rising transforms individuals and fuels broader changes. With resources and support, undocumented young people are able to get an education, pursue careers, and build a brighter future for themselves and their community.
It is essential to support undocumented entrepreneurs who are working to create positive social change. Their contributions are vital to the state of California, as well as the entire country.
Funding Information
They offer two different types of one-time, non-renewable grants:
- Developing Business/Nonprofit Owner Grants ($5,000): Grants to individuals starting or growing a business/nonprofit with annual gross business revenue/gross receipts less than $100,000.
- Mature Business/Nonprofit Owner Grants ($10,000): Grants to individuals growing a business/nonprofit with annual gross business revenue/gross receipts more than $100,000 up to $1,000,000.
- They will disburse $4.06M in funding through $5,000 or $10,000 one-time grants.
Eligibility Criteria
- SEED funding is open to California residents who are starting or growing a business/nonprofit in California that addresses a social problem or community need.

Applicants must identify with at least one of the following:
- Limited English proficiency
- Non U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders). This includes individuals who may not be lawfully present in the United States, and individuals who have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
- SEED funding is only available for people doing business in California. However, businesses/nonprofits do not have to be registered to apply for SEED funding.
Businesses/ Nonprofits that are Not Eligible:
- Businesses without a physical location in California.
- Government entities (other than Native American tribes) or elected official offices.
- Businesses primarily engaged in political or lobbying activities.
- Passive businesses, investment companies and investors who file a Schedule E on their personal tax returns.
- Churches and other religious institutions.
- Financial businesses primarily engaged in the business of lending, such as banks, finance companies and factoring companies.
- Businesses engaged in any activity that is illegal under federal, state or local law.
- Businesses of a sexual nature, including businesses which present live performances.
- Businesses engaged in any socially undesirable activity or activity that may be considered predatory in nature such as rent-to-own businesses, check cashing businesses, and companies with multi-level marketing practices.
- Businesses that restrict patronage for any reason other than capacity.
- Speculative businesses.
- Multiple business entities, franchises, locations, etc. are not eligible for multiple grants and are only allowed to apply once using their eligible small business with the highest revenue.
