Mexico: UNFPA’s $2.6M Program to Empower Indigenous Women

Mexico: The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives 2023

Deadline: 3-Jul-25

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched a new phase of its “Fashion Expressions” Program, aimed at advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Mexico. The initiative specifically focuses on supporting indigenous women artisans in the state of Querétaro by enhancing their social and economic capacities.

This program operates across several cross-sectoral areas, particularly in gender equality, capacity building, and skills development. The total indicative budget allocated for this initiative is approximately $2.6 million.

The geographic focus of this program is Mexico, with targeted implementation in the Estado de Querétaro, where the project will build on lessons from a previous cohort to better tailor the program for its next phase.

Key expected outcomes include a thorough review and analysis of social, demographic, and cultural data relevant to indigenous women artisans. This will include evaluating the first cohort’s results to adapt content, activities, and strategies for greater impact in the second cohort.

A brief diagnostic study will be prepared to assess the current status of participating women, including their literacy, numeracy, artisanal knowledge, and business skills. This data will help shape a relevant and inclusive training curriculum that addresses their real needs and leverages their existing strengths.

A new, adapted curriculum will be developed and implemented to empower women artisans economically and socially. It will focus on bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, freedom from violence, and sustainability while respecting traditional artisanal practices.

Mentoring and peer learning models will be introduced to reinforce textile and craft techniques learned during training. These models aim to foster continuous improvement and shared learning among participants.

The program will also support the development of customized business models with the artisans, helping them enhance their financial, administrative, and entrepreneurial skills to promote long-term economic autonomy.

Finally, the initiative will recognize and elevate the contributions of participating women through a comprehensive communications strategy. This will involve local, state, and national outreach efforts in collaboration with UNFPA’s communications team and strategic partners.
