The American Water Charitable Foundation is inviting applications for the Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program under the theme of Water and Environment.
The American Water Charitable Foundation is an independent, 501(c)(3) private foundation, supported by the shareholders of American Water. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees, composed of officers and leaders of American Water or its subsidiaries, review Foundation programs, guidelines, and distribution of funds.
Foundation’s Mission
- To demonstrate American Water’s commitment to being a good neighbor, citizen and contributor to the communities where the company and its employees live, work and operate.
Vision
- To support employees in their own charitable endeavors, provide support for targeted disaster relief efforts, and provide funding for higher-level initiatives related to clean water, conservation, education, and community sustainability.
Focus Areas
- Water and Environment: Programs focused on clean water, conservation, environmental education, climate variability, and water-based recreation. Examples include programs that improve, restore or protect watersheds/water quality; promote water conservation; and/ or improve equitable access to water-based recreation in underserved communities. Environmental projects that seek to educate, inform and advance environmental issues to preserve and protect natural resources.
Appropriate Grant amount to Request
- The amount should be based on your budget. As their Foundation has limited resources to address many needs in the communities they serve, a request for an amount that is not feasible may eliminate your project from consideration.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or K-12 public school, college or university. Organization must either operate within, or directly benefit, an American Water service territory.
- While American Water values its business relationships and takes tremendous pride in serving their communities, the IRS prohibits private foundations from advancing the business interests and/or business ventures of the company. Any grant that could be viewed as attempting to influence the outcome of a business proposal, for example, will be declined to avoid self-dealing practices.
- The IRS prohibits private foundations from paying for the recruitment expenses and/or training that American Water would otherwise have to pay. Job skills or training programs to maintain or gain employment with American Water would be considered a self-dealing practice. Any grant that could be viewed as a recruitment tool or inducement for employment will be declined. Thank you for understanding.
- An organization’s eligibility for a grant is subject to the final discretion of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. The Foundation reserves the right to decline a grant request under any of its programs to any organization for any reason or no reason at all.
