The Leading the Way Home 2022 Grants Program is now open for applications.
Projects considered for funding must address the needs of those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Surrey. They will focus on contributing to capital projects that create or maintain housing stock, programs that increase the access to housing, and initiatives that build capacity in the homelessness and housing sector in Surrey.
Priorities
Eligible projects must address one or more of the following Key Priorities along the continuum of needs related to homelessness and access to housing in Surrey:

Creating Housing: Creation, renovation, or maintenance of housing stock, including transitional supportive, permanent supportive, or mixed-use models. Capital activities eligible under this priority include:
- Predevelopmnet
- Development/Construction
- Renovation or Repurposing
- Equipment or Furnishings
- Retention or Maintenance
- Consulting Services (to help move the project forward through stages of development)
- Other capital activities or equipment/furnishings that may support the project come to fruition, leverage other funding/partnership opportunities, or support the long-term sustainability of the project

Innovative Projects: Pilot projects or inventive initiatives/approaches that:
- Increase access to housing
- Reduce or prevent homelessness
- Support individuals in shelter and spaces created during COVID in the transition to regular services

Building Capacity: Initiatives that increase the capacity of the homelessness and housing sector to respond to/address homelessness, including projects that:
- Enhance service coordination across/among organizations
- Promote collaboration and partnerships that leverage other support
- Build knowledge, skills, abilities, tools or increase access to training opportunities (sector-wide or within the organization)
- Key elements of, or equipment for, crucial programming that may require some seed or bridge funding support (SHHS does not fund core operations or provide ongoing funding for core programs, however, there may be pieces that SHHS can fund with the possibility or multi-year support)
Funding Information
The total funding available for 2022 is $250,000. There is no minimum or maximum amount required per request.
Eligibility Criteria
- Charitable organizations or registered societies, or for-profit entities that are working in partnership with a charitable organization and have a written agreement in place
- Projects addressing issues and gaps related to homelessness and access to housing and that are based in and provide direct benefit to Surrey and Surrey residents
- Projects that are operating in Surrey
Ineligibility Criteria
- Organizations without charitable tax status
- Fundraising activities
- Retroactive funding
- Conferences
- Deficit funding
- Core operational/program funding
- Ongoing programming or ongoing operational costs
- Services or facilities that are not in compliance with municipal licensing and zoning requirements
- Activities that are already funded/provided by another source
Requirements
The application should:
- Target the SHHS priority populations – those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Surrey
- Identify other internal and/or external funding contributions and partnerships being used for the project
- Address one or more of the Key Priorities
- Support the goals of the Surrey Homelessness & Housing Fund
