Deadline: 19 September 2019
The U.S. Embassy in Australia has announced an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a program to identify, develop, and equip next-generation leaders and policy thinkers to increase public support for U.S. and Australian engagement to develop and advance our shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
Objectives
- Young Australians tend to be skeptical of the importance of the U.S.-Australia bilateral relationship; only 38 percent of Australians under the age of 45 said that our alliance is “very important,” according to a recent Lowy Institute poll.
- Confidence in democratic institutions among that age group is also in decline; according to the same poll, only 47 percent of young Australians believe that democracy is preferable to other forms of government.
- To address these trends, and develop policies that win support for our shared vision for a free, open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, the U.S. Embassy in Australia seeks to fund a program that identifies, develops, and equips next-generation leaders to gain a greater understanding about the U.S.-Australia alliance, the common values and democratic principles that underpin our two societies, and our shared vision for the Indo-Pacific.
Outcomes
The U.S. Embassy in Australia expects that the program will result in the following outcomes:
- Identify a diverse network of next-generation leaders who, through sustained engagement, could build public support for the alliance, reaffirm our shared values, and strengthen ongoing collaboration on joint policy initiatives in the Indo-Pacific;
- Develop awareness among younger Australians about policies that support the alliance; our mutual commitment to democratic principles and shared values; our strong economic foundation based on high-tech R&D, innovation, and substantial financial investment that significantly contributes to the prosperity of both our countries and has the potential to do more in the Indo-Pacific region; and a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific; and
- Equip participants with skills, networks, and development opportunities that enable them to become next-generation stewards of democratic institutions and a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
