Deadline: 08-Sep-21
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is publishing this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to request applications for the Program on the Origins of Gastroesophageal Cancers (R01) to address the complex mechanisms and effectors that direct the proliferation and expansion of tumor-initiating cells and their progeny to initiate these cancers.
The focus of the FOA is on gastric and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinomas. The program is envisioned to provide unprecedented opportunities to outline the earliest cellular changes in transformation that precede any histological manifestations or neoplasia.
The R01 research projects supported by this FOA will collectively function as the scientific center of the program and lead the testing of novel hypotheses and research questions, and the generation of data, models, and technologies to benefit this challenging and nascent biology-centered research field.
Each R01 application will be led by multi-PI with complimentary scientific and technical expertise to tackle specific yet perplexing questions on the cellular origins of either gastric or GEJ cancers. A multi-PI collaboration that brings a new scientific discipline to this field of research is particularly encouraged.
The applications are envisioned to present novel scientific questions, strong leadership and institutional infrastructure, and support from critical resources that would enable the accomplishment of the proposed research goals and their overarching hypotheses; development of sharable models and technologies; and collaborations across the program and with the larger scientific community.
The program will thoroughly and comprehensively tackle cancers of the stomach and GEJ regions to compare and contrast the contributions of tumor-initiating cells and their fundamental mechanisms and adopt a community approach to experimental challenges and methodological hurdles.
Funding Information
- Application budget is limited to $600,000 in direct costs per year.
- NCI intends to fund up to 6 awards, corresponding to a total funding of $5.8 million in fiscal year 2022.
- The maximum project period is 5 years.
Non-responsive Applications
The following applications will be considered as non-responsive to this FOA:
- Applications that focus on cancers other than gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancers
- Applications that focus on mechanisms other than those directed at the early cellular origins of gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancers and as solicited in this FOA
- Applications that focus exclusively on early lesions and their progression
- Applications that focus exclusively on mechanisms of cancer progression and metastasis
- Applications submitted by individual Principal Investigators.
