The Auckland Council’s Franklin Local Board Waterway Protection Fund Program is now open for applications.

The WPF:
- is available for projects on private land (focus catchments will be confirmed), and
-
will support landowners to conserve and improve the health of the land, streams, wetlands, waterways, and harbors through good riparian management by:
- reducing erosion
- restricting stock access to water, and
- enhancing water quality.
Funding Priorities
- the type of environmental benefits, including improved water quality, bank stabilization, reduction in contaminants through stock exclusion, and aquatic ecological health
- the total area and length of riparian margin that your project or activity will protect and enhance
- the extent of community involvement in leading or participating in the project
- the connection with other landowners to form partnerships and share knowledge
- the extent of mana whenua involvement and participation in the project.
Funding Information
- For the 2021-2022 financial year, (1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022), a total of $250,000 has been allocated to the fund.
- Applicants can apply for up to 50 percent of their project cost, i.e. the applicant must supply or source the other half of the project budget.
- This contribution can be an in-kind contribution such as voluntary labor, or contribution by other donors.
- Applicants will have 18 months to complete their projects.
Outcomes
The Waterway Protection Fund supports projects that:
- protect and enhance land, streams, wetlands, and waterways and
- reduce the potential for erosion and water contamination.
Types of projects funded by the grant
Who can apply?
- Funding is available to all landowners including farmers and lifestyle block owners, and community or environmental groups located or operating within these areas.
- Priority will be given to applications from adjoining landowners or landowners on both sides of a waterway, and those partnering with hapu/ iwi.
- Lower priority will be given to projects that are solely weed control initiatives.
- Consideration will be given to projects on publicly owned land proposed by community groups, and/ or collectives of local landowners.
- If you have an existing grant you are eligible to apply for further funding for the next stage of your project provided that previous funding from the Auckland Council is spent as agreed before any new funding is accessed for further activities.
