Are you planning a community event that needs funding to make it happen? If yes, then apply for the Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund.
The Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund is a collaboration between Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Tauranga City Council, Acorn Foundation, Bay Trust, and TECT to provide a streamlined approach to the support of community events taking place in the region. The fund provides financial support to events that are community-led, deliver positive social and economic outcomes, and enrich the communities.
Strategic Focus Areas
- Arts & Culture – celebrates diverse cultural identity and the creative arts. They are committed to celebrating their diverse cultural identities and fostering the creative arts to enhance the wellbeing of the community.
- Community Inclusivity – encourages social inclusiveness and accessibility within the community. They welcome events to their District that build community pride, embrace diversity and reduce or remove participation barriers.
- Community Focused– shows a direct benefit to the community. They welcome events that identify a need within the community and work with the community to deliver the event.
- Health, Safety and Wellbeing – shows responsibility for planning and managing risk to deliver a safe event for the community. Promotes mental wellness, healthy living and social connection and understand how this looks for different groups and communities.
- Kaupapa Māori – promotes and shares tikanga māori. They recognise the importance of nurturing Māoritanga principles and welcome events which interweave māori traditions, values and language into events.
- Sports and Active Recreation – provides sporting and recreational experiences for the community. They encourage the use of council reserves, walkways and cycleways as a place to be active, to be involved and to connect.
Priorities
They prioritise events that:
- Are accessible for the community – free or low-cost entry
- Encourage participation and have widespread appeal within the community
- Support a varied community event portfolio
- Highlight events of cultural and historical significance
- Engage local volunteers and help develop Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty’s volunteer workforce
- Attract visitation and deliver economic benefits
Funding Information
- Total fund is $100k + GST for events in Western Bay of Plenty and $600k + GST for events in Tauranga occurring between 1 September 2022 and 30 June 2023.
- The maximum grant is $15,000 +GST for events in Western Bay of Plenty and $50,000 + GST for events in Tauranga.
What They Don’t Fund?
- Are run by individuals. They will only grant funding to a legal entity/organisation.
- Are commercial ventures seeking significant profit.
- Take place prior to an event funding decision being made.
- Are primarily political, protests or for the purpose of religious persuasion.
- Are primarily for the purpose of fundraising or may transfer funding to another party.
- Are primarily focused on alcohol or gambling.
- Are private functions, meetings, conventions etc. Private is defined as any event where the general public aren’t able to attend or purchase tickets.
- Are markets, stand-alone installations or exhibitions.
- Are for research, feasibility, or evaluation of events outside of the event itself.
- Require the funding to support the repayment of debt.
- Support business as usual operations, general salaries, rents or other overhead costs, except as a proportion of the total event costs.
- Support repairs/maintenance and capex projects outside of an event itself.
- Occur outside of Tauranga City Council or Western Bay of Plenty District Council boundaries.
- The organiser has already received event funding for within the current financial year.
Eligibility Criteria
- If you have an existing funding agreement with one of their funding partners, you can still apply, but that funder will be unable to contribute to the funding offered if successful.
- As this is a new fund, they are currently not considering multi-year funding applications.
- They encourage one application per organisation if multiple events are to be considered.

- Be community-driven events that enrich their communities through active participation and inclusion
- Align with their event funding values and at least one of their priorities
