The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is seeking applicants for its program entitled “Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI)”, to encourage continuous development of innovative ideas that will position U.S. Agriculture at the global forefront.
The program will address the challenges that have never been addressed before in the areas of food security, climate change, environmental quality and natural resources, nutrition, obesity, food safety, strong families and vibrant communities, and thriving youth.

- Plant health and production and plant products
- Animal health and production and animal products
- Food safety, nutrition, and health
- Bioenergy, natural resources, and environment
- Agriculture systems and technology
- Agriculture economics and rural communities
Funding Information
In FY 2016, approximately $130 million will be available to support the AFRI Foundational Program Areas that are designed to help solve critical problems across the United States for projects up to 5 years (FY 2016 – FY 2020).
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants for Research Projects include:
- State Agricultural Experiment Station
- Colleges and universities (including junior colleges offering associate degrees or higher)
- University research foundations
- Other research institutions and organizations
- Federal agencies
- National laboratories
- Private organizations or corporations
- Individuals who are U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents
- Eligible institutions do not include foreign and international organizations
