The Nordic Working Group for Seas and Coasts (NHK) is accepting proposals to support projects for Nordic efforts to improve the sea and coastal environment, according to the Nordic Cooperation Program for Environment and Climate 2019-2024.
NHK supports the work of developing documentation for joint Nordic efforts to improve the marine and coastal environment. Representatives from at least three Nordic countries, or two Nordic and one Baltic country, must participate in the project application. It is important that the project has a clear Nordic benefit and that the objectives are in line with NHK’s prioritized themes for project funds in 2024. Granted projects must normally be published in the Nordic Council of Ministers’ publication series.
Priority Themes for 2024
- Harmonization and standardization of eDNA methods between national monitoring programs in Nordic marine areas.
- Proposals and recommendations for the dissemination of knowledge that provides increased understanding of the ocean (Ocean literacy) and contributes to a positive commitment to the Nordic marine and coastal environment.
- Effects of alien species in Arctic and Nordic sea areas.
- Overall and cumulative effects of offshore wind power in Nordic waters. Joint Nordic marine planning for offshore wind power and collaborations to protect ecosystems and use of areas that cross national marine boundaries
- Local restoration projects in Nordic coastal zones: effects on ecosystems, cost and/or socio-economic value.
- The effect of bottom trawling and other activities on carbon stored in Nordic marine environments, and/or the impact of activities on the capacity of Nordic blue forest and sediments to act as carbon sinks (carbon storage).
- Secondary effects of ocean acidification and increased temperatures on biota.
- Effects of area-based management measures, eg protected areas and climate and environmental refuges, on Nordic marine ecosystems.

- 200 000 – 600 000 DKK.

Criteria
- The application for funds will be assessed by experts at the Nordic countries’ authorities for management of the marine and coastal environment. The quality of the application, a well-thought-out mediation plan, as well as the project’s relevance to the cooperation in the Nordic Council of Ministers and the priority themes of the Sea and Coastal Group are given great weight in the assessment.
- Relevance , in relation to NHK’s prioritized themes and Nordic benefit
- The quality of the application , with regard to description of problems, objectives, project plan, organization and budget
- The composition of the project group , including common experiences and synergy effects of collaboration
- The project’s novelty, with regard to method and generated knowledge
- Mediation plan for results obtained, including the relevance of mediation activities to intended target groups.
