The Koel Gallery is inviting applications for the Saahil ki Kahaaniyan – Stories from the Coast Projects to raise awareness of the impact of climate change on the coastal areas of Pakistan, particularly its fragile Mangrove Ecosystem, with a view to promoting sustainable coastal development.
Saahil ki Kahaaniyan – Stories from the Coast is a collaborative project by Karachi-based KOEL Gallery and the British Council.
It also aims to share a meaningful dialogue with local stakeholders including coastal communities, artisans, experts, and researchers, highlighting their central role in the relationship between land, coast, and climate change.
Funding Information
- Grants will be awarded up to a maximum of PKR 700,000 per project.
Eligibility Criteria
- Pakistan-based individuals and organisations are eligible to apply.
- Grantees based outside of Karachi will have to make provision for travel to the city for key project meetings and
- installation/opening when their work is showcased at the public exhibition in August 2022.
Project Criteria
Proposed projects must meet the following criteria:
- Use one or more artistic mediums (visual/performing arts, film, music, literature, textiles, ceramics, and crafts) to produce work that can become part of a public exhibition.
- Further the objective of raising awareness through the artistic engagement of the impact of climate change on the coastal areas of Pakistan, particularly its fragile Mangrove Ecosystem, with a view to promoting sustainable coastal development.
- Engage with local stakeholders including coastal communities, artisans, experts, and researchers to inform their projects.
- Include first-hand research on Pakistan’s coastal areas.

- Saahil ki Kahaaniyan – Stories from the Coast is inviting grant applications from Pakistanbased artists and arts organisations exploring this theme through a variety of mediums including visual and performing arts, film, music, literature, textiles, ceramics and crafts.
- Grantees will be selected by a panel of curators and artists working across the fields of arts and ecology from the UK and Pakistan. KOEL Gallery Director, Noorjehan Bilgrami will work with the selected artists to curate a showcase to be displayed in Karachi in August 2022.
- Grantees will also be invited to present their projects and explore opportunities for possible showcasing of their work in the UK.
