The Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) is seeking applications to administers a funding and learning initiative to invest in and promote engagement at the intersection of faith and democracy.
PACE seeks to support work that advances these questions. Applicants who are invited to submit proposals will be asked to articulate how their work explores these questions, what that work looks like, and how involvement in this program would catalyze that work. The proposed work can be new programming or build on existing efforts; it can be project-based or integrated throughout the organization’s programming/approach.
In its second year, Faith In/And Democracy is an effort to explore the ways faith and faith communities can support democracy and civic life.
The initiative will explore these framing questions in 2020-2021:
- How do PACE encourages and support more people to build relationships and work with people who come from different racial, religious, cultural and/or political backgrounds and perspectives?
- How do they invest in faith communities as viable sites for this work?
Through this question, PACE seeks to understand:
- What personal capacities—values, training, experience—support faith leaders to engage across difference and prepare them to lead that work in their institutions?
- What institutional capacities—strategic, programmatic, tactical—best enable organizations to do that work successfully within and beyond their own constituencies?
- What calls leaders and enables institutions to confront discomfort and disagreement in their efforts to “reach beyond the choir?”
Funding Information
- In 2020, PACE will award 5-6 grants, up to $50,000 each.
Values
- This initiative’s values are rooted in PACE’s organizational principles: experimentation, responsible philanthropy, learning outside their own bubbles, embracing the power of the collective, and diversity. It is also motivated by the values of humility, curiosity, empathy, respect, dignity, and love.
- PACE seeks evidence that these values are shared by funded grantees. It also seeks evidence that their work is driven by both intellectual knowledge (theory, data, and metrics), as well as by the wisdom of the heart—courage, compassion, patience, and the teachings of lived experience.
Eligibility Criteria
- Qualified applicants must be (or be fiscally sponsored by) 501(c)(3) public charities based in the United States that do not participate in partisan political campaigns and do not conduct substantial lobbying activities. The work proposed must also be focused in the United States.
- Because of the program’s limited scope, PACE is looking for grantees who have already demonstrated success in their communities. Efforts with a proven track record are poised to help PACE identify promising directions for future investment and models/learnings to disseminate to the field.
