The Embassy of the United States of America in Manila is pleased to announce an open competition for eligible higher education institutions (HEIs) to submit proposals to the 2023 Academic Writing Center (AWC) Support Funds Grant Competition.
The U.S. Embassy’s Regional English Language Office (RELO) is currently offering a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Camps entitled Establishing Academic Writing Center at International Higher Education Institutions. Potential applicants for this funding opportunity successfully complete this MOOC the associated MOOC Camp to gain a better understanding of various administrative aspects of AWC operations. Completion of the course is a prerequisite for obtaining funding under this award opportunity because the U.S. Embassy anticipates that many of the required elements of the funding proposal will be addressed in the MOOC.
Examples of substantial involvement can include, but are not limited to:
- Active participation or collaboration with the recipient in the implementation of the award.
- Review and approval of one stage of work before another can begin.
- Review and approval of substantive provisions of proposed subawards or contracts.
- Approval of the recipient’s budget or plan of work prior to the award.
- Approval of all messaging content before it is used.
Purpose of AWC Support Funds Grants
- The Embassy of the United States of America invites proposals for funding to assist in the establishment of academic writing centers at Philippine HEIs to support scholarly publication by members of the Philippine scientific community. Each AWC funded under this assistance award program will serve as a support unit within the host HEI which will provide consultative services to improve academic writing in English as a Foreign Language. By improving written academic English proficiency and increasing publication rates, the AWC will serve to improve overall institutional quality at the host institution.
Funding Information
- Award Amount (pending availability of funds): $75,000
- Number of awards anticipated: 3 – 5 awards. Individual awards may range from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $25,000.
- Period of Performance: Up to 12 months.
Participants and Audiences
- The U.S. Embassy is only able to consider proposals that will be carried out at HEIs physically located in the Philippines. However, this does not preclude joint applications from U.S. institutions or entities working in partnership with a Philippine HEI or consortium of HEIs.
- Possible AWC audiences include but are not limited to undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral associates, junior and senior faculty, professional and scientific staff, researchers, and scholars in different academic fields.
Eligibility Criteria
- The U.S. Embassy welcomes applications from:
- Philippine public and non-profit private higher education institutions
- U.S. institutions or entities working in partnership with a Philippine-based HEI
- Associations working in partnership with a Philippine-based HEI.
