The First Nations Development Institute (First Nations) is pleased to announce Setting the Table for a Healthy Food System to support work to build the organizational and program capacity of Native American food pantries and food banks, thus boosting control, cultural responsiveness, and infrastructure of community food systems.

Grant opportunities are focused within five key areas:
- Achieving Native Financial Empowerment
- Investing in Native Youth
- Strengthening Tribal & Community Institutions
- Advancing Household & Community Asset-Building Strategies
- Nourishing Native Foods & Health
Funding Information
- Through the Setting the Table for a Healthy Food System, First Nations expects to award 12 grants averaging $35,000 to support Native American-led food pantries and food banks.
- Total requests for project budgets within this funding opportunity should not exceed $35,000.
- The grant period for this funding opportunity will commence December 1, 2021, and end June 1, 2023.
Eligible Projects
What types of projects does First Nations support:
- First Nations is committed to strengthening American Indian economies to support healthy native communities.
- As a funder, First Nations is interested in investing in institutions and models that strengthen asset control and support economic development for American Indian people and their communities.
Activities
- Selected grantees under this opportunity must use funding to support food pantries and food banks within their community.
- Examples of allowable activities under this funding opportunity include, but are not limited to:
- Paying community members to harvest traditional foods which will be distributed through the food bank
- Purchasing food to distribute through the food pantry
- Food pantry employee salaries
Eligibility Criteria
Types of eligible applicants include, but are not limited to:
- Federal- and State-Recognized Tribal Governments (Tribal Government Programs, such as Tribal Arts Programs, Heritage Departments, Economic Development Entities, etc.)
- Native-controlled 501(c)(3) nonprofits
- Native-controlled community organizations with fiscal sponsorship
- Native 7871 Organizations
