The Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples is inviting proposals for its Thriving Women Program to support Indigenous women-led, community-based projects that empower Native Peoples to address gender violence and restore wellness (individual, family, and community).
Thriving Women projects nurture healthy and thriving Native communities, and reclaim a world without violence against Native women, children and families.
Focus Areas
Applications should include work related to any or all of the following areas:
- Birthkeeping, Motherhood, and Kinship: Projects centralize traditional birthing systems, motherhood, and kinship-building, such as midwifery, prenatal community education, and sisterhood convenings/groups.
- Cultural Continuity: Projects support Native Identity development and cultural education of women and girls, such as on ancestral languages, traditional foods and lands, coming-of-age ceremonies, Indigenous concepts of gender and community roles, and other cultural activities.
- A World Without Violence Against Women: Projects include leadership development, emergency shelter and crisis support services, issue advocacy, educational workshops, and traditional approaches to healing and protection.
Funding Information
- $1,000 to $30,000 for Contiguous United States, Native Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
- $10,000 to $50,000 for Native Alaska
Eligible Projects
Potential projects may include:
- Reviving subsistence and traditional food systems
- Traditional health and wellness practices (birthkeeping, healing, arts, dancing, etc.)
- Gendered violence issue advocacy (events, workshops, campaigns, etc.)
- Culturally appropriate crisis services/trauma support
- Multi-generational leadership gatherings
- Bolstering coming-of-age ceremonies
- Exploring the link between extractive industries and violence against Native women/girls
Eligibility Criteria
Organizations that wish to apply must adhere to the following:
- Be a non-profit organization with 501(3)(c) tax-exemption status. Community based projects that do not have non-profit status are welcome to contact SGF regarding Affiliate Program / Fiscal Administration for consideration of our Affiliate Program.
- Engagement, Leadership & Decision-making – 80% or more Indigenous Board of Directors, with majority Indigenous women, and an Indigenous Executive Director.
- Emerge directly from the community and are led by the Indigenous Peoples impacted by the project.
- Be in good standing with the Seventh Generation Fund.
