Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program – Australia

The Tasmanian Government is seeking applications for the Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program.

The Tasmanian Government recognises that rising costs of living have been challenging for many Tasmanians and has committed $300,000 to increase the provision of food relief for those in need.

The funding will be released in two rounds (2023 and 2024) to support Tasmanian food relief organisations to provide locally appropriate and meaningful responses to reduce the rate of food insecurity in their local communities.

Food relief may comprise hampers and/or ready-to eat meals. All food must be provided at low or no cost.

Aim

• Increased community need for food relief has become apparent across Tasmania and has been reported by food relief providers, community organisations and community members.
• To respond to this community need, the Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program will provide funding to local initiatives and small food relief providers. The grants program will be for local organisations and will assist in ensuring sufficient delivery of food relief for those in need.
• The aim of this grant program is to fund not-for-profit Tasmanian local community organisations that currently provide food relief directly to members of their local community to increase the provision of direct food relief for those in need.

Funding Information

• The total funding pool is $300,000, with $150,000 being made available for this round. Organisations can apply for up to $10,000 each with a maximum of one application per organisation.
• Successful applicants are expected to expend their funding within 12 months of receiving the grant.

Funding Eligibility

• Food Hampers
  • For food hampers, funding may be provided for:
  • the purchase of food staples such as fresh fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal, flour, butter, milk, and including food for those with particular cultural, medical or dietary needs (excluding luxury items such as alcohol);
  • the costs of delivery of food hampers;
  • the purchase of additional storage items such as freezers or shelving to enable the organisation to provide food relief; and.
  • Low-cost or free food hampers can be either served on-site or pre-packaged.
• Ready to Eat Meals
  • For ready-to-eat meals funding may be provided for:
  • the purchase of ingredients and packaging to prepare ready to eat meals;
  • the costs of delivery of pre-packaged meals; and
  • the purchase of additional storage items such as freezers or shelving to enable the organisation to provide food relief.
  • Ready-to-eat meals must be prepared in accordance with food safety standards and Australian Dietary guidelines.
  • Ready-to-eat meals can be either served on-site or pre-packaged.

Eligibility Criteria

• The Program is open to Tasmanian not-for-profit community organisations
• For the purposes of this program, ‘local community’ is considered to be the local government municipal area. It is expected that the majority of people accessing those services live in the municipal area.
• Applicants must be an incorporated or other legal entity, or auspiced by a not-for-profit legal entity.
• Applicants who apply must:
  • be an Australian organisation that delivers food relief to Tasmanians;
  • hold a currently active Australian Business Number (ABN);
  • be an incorporated organisation;
  • be a not-for-profit organisation; or
  • be a not-for-profit company registered under company law.
• Note: Eligible organisations who are successfully awarded a grant are required to hold and maintain appropriate public liability insurance. Applicants will be required to provide a copy of their public liability insurance as part of the application process.

Ineligibility Criteria

• The following entitles are not eligible to apply for funding under the Program:
  • Organisations that do not currently provide food relief to Tasmanians;
  • Australian Government agencies;
  • Tasmanian Government agencies;
  • Local government authorities (councils);
  • tertiary institutions;
  • political parties;
  • individuals and/or sole traders; or for profit organisations.
