Te Pou is seeking applications for its “Consumer leadership Development Grant Program” to support disabled people and family/whānau to take part in leadership development activities. This includes:
- training or learning activities that develop consumers’ and family/whānau’s leadership skills
- training or learning activities that are for the benefit of other disabled people or the disability sector in general.

- self-determination, confidence and authority
- consumer roles and influencing quality services
- citizenship, wellbeing and inclusion.
Funding Information
- Participants can be funded up to $5,000 (GST inclusive) per calendar year.
- Organisations can be funded up to $80,000 (GST inclusive) per calendar year.
Funding Criteria
The consumer leadership development grant covers the costs of consumers or family/whānau taking part in leadership development activities. For the purpose of this grant ‘consumer’ includes disabled people and family and whānau.
The grant can be used for:
- course or workshop fees
- related resources (for example, workbooks, tutors/facilitators)
- accessibility costs for disabled people, including travel and accommodation and the cost of support people (accessibility costs do not count towards individual or organisational caps).
- The grant does not fund course development and administration, standard service delivery, service development and business-as-usual costs.
Eligibility Criteria
- Participants must be:
- be a disabled person eligible to receive Ministry of Health funded disability services or be a family/whānau member of an eligible disabled person
- Ministry of Health funded Disability Support Services Individualised Funding (IF) Clients/Agents (Note: District Health Board IF clients/agents are not eligible)
- be sponsored by an organisation and be supported to participate in the learning activity
- be New Zealand citizens or hold permanent resident status.
- The organisation must be a:
- MOH funded Disability Service Provider; or
- Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) that are part of the DPO coalition.
- Applications must be made by Disabled Support Services (DSS) providers that hold a current Ministry of Health contract or by Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) that are part of the DPO coalition.
- Applications can be made in support of development activities for consumers associated with the applicant organisation; or an organisation can sponsor an application by consumers beyond their service.
- To be sponsored for this grant applicants need to be eligible for DSS services. If they are eligible for services but not receiving them, they can also be sponsored. Check if they are eligible for DSS services.
- Applications must be submitted by the DSS provider or DPO providers. Individual consumers cannot apply directly.
